The Destiny - Insurgent

The determination - Divergent (Original title: Divergent ) is an American science fiction film from 2014. The director Neil Burger produced the film in collaboration with the film companies Summit Entertainment and Red Wagon Entertainment. It is based on the novel The Determination by Veronica Roth . The world premiere took place on March 18, 2014 in Los Angeles . It ran regularly in US cinemas on March 21, 2014. The film started in Germany on April 10, 2014.

action

The film takes place in a fictional dystopian future of the city of Chicago . The cityscape consists of the same buildings as today, but these are marked by war damage and look dilapidated. A high protective fence shields the city completely from the outside world. The city dwellers are divided into five factions, social castes, according to personality traits, who exercise certain occupations in society: the Altruan (the selfless, government and social services), the Ferox (the fearless, police & military), the Ken (the scholars , Scientists & EDP), the Candor (the frank, justice) and the Amite (the friendly and peaceful, agriculture & administration). Adolescents must decide at the age of 16 at an annual ceremony which parliamentary group they want to belong to in the future. The decision can only be made once in a lifetime and then cannot be reversed. The principle “fraction before blood” applies. For those who do not choose the parliamentary group in which they grew up, this means that they have to leave their parents' home and previous life behind. A test that all young people are subjected to is intended to provide information about their inner determination and help them to find the group that best suits their personality.

Beatrice Prior, who grew up with the Altruan, is strongly drawn to the Ferox, but she is unsure. Her test is supervised by Tori, a Ferox woman. She gives Beatrice a drug and puts her into a simulation with various critical decision-making situations. Then she explains to Beatrice, who is confused about the process, that the test had failed with her. Beatrice is indefinite. It has properties from not just one, but several factions, namely Altruan, Ken and Ferox. Since such people are seen as a threat to the system, she must not tell anyone about it. Tori had a brother who was an indeterminate who was considered a danger and was eventually eliminated. She changes the test result to Altruan and advises Beatrice to stay with her parents. There she would have the best chance of remaining undetected.

At first she hesitates at the ceremony, but then decides to switch to the Ferox, where she calls herself Tris from now on. There she meets Four, who accompanies her and the other faction changers through the phases of initiation . Again and again she is confronted with the fact that she is indefinite, but also feels more and more belonging to the Ferox. In the last phase of initiation she has to face her greatest fears, but this could prove to be doomed. Since she is indefinite, she can free herself from the simulations. Together with Four, who finds out that it is indefinite, she trains to pass the final exam, which is also a simulation of the greatest fears, and not to give herself away.

As the final exam approaches, Four shows Tris that the Ken are bringing transmitters to the Ferox who could make the entire faction serve as an obedient army. After Tris has passed the final exam, one of the transmitters is implanted in her, like all other Ferox. During the night Tris wakes up and realizes that everyone else is trapped in a simulation triggered by the transmitters. Tris manages to act as if she were also out of her mind. She finds Four, who gives her to understand that he is also not influenced by the implanted transmitter and is therefore just like herself an indeterminate.

The Ferox are supposed to kill the Altruan on the orders of the Ken and Tris worries about her parents. Four and Tris are exposed and separated during the action. Tris is saved by her mother, who wants to bring her to her father and sacrifices herself to save her daughter. When they arrive at their father's, he and Tris, along with Marcus - Four's father - and Caleb - Tris 'brother - want to stop the simulation and the killing and break into the command center, where Tris' father dies. There Tris makes it alone into the control room and is almost killed by Four: He is now also in a simulation, but Tris manages to wake him up. Together they can get Jeanine Matthews, the leader of the Ken, to stop the simulation and delete the program. But they have to flee and together with Caleb, Marcus and a former Ferox initiator named Peter get on a train that takes them out of Chicago and to the Amite farms.

background

Production preparation

In March 2011 Summit Entertainment received the film rights to Veronica Roth's bestseller The Determination . Together with Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher from the production company Red Wagon Entertainment, the implementation of the novel was set up. Less than a year and a half later, director Neil Burger was won over to realize the project. Evan Daugherty was hired as a screenwriter in November 2012, who wrote this together with Vanessa Taylor .

A budget of 40 million US dollars was initially available for the production of the film. Following the success of The Hunger Games , Lionsgate increased its budget to $ 85 million.

Casting

Kate Winslet at the world premiere in Los Angeles on March 18, 2014

In mid-October 2012 rumors surfaced that Shailene Woodley would play the lead role of Beatrice "Tris" Prior . This was officially confirmed at the end of the month. For the male lead role of Tobias "Four" Eaton have Lucas Till , Jack Reynor , Jeremy Irvine , Alex Pettyfer , Brenton Thwaites , Alexander Ludwig and Luke Bracey auditioned. In March 2013 the role went to Theo James . Although James is ten years older than his character, he got the role. The reason was that James and Woodley would complement each other very well. Also, it is very important to Summit Entertainment that they stick very closely to the novel, and they believe that they succeeded with James and Woodley.

Also in March 2013, Ray Stevenson , Jai Courtney and Aaron Eckhart were in discussion for roles. In the end, roles only went to Stevenson and Courtney. Kate Winslet was already in conversation in January 2013 for the role of the schemer Jeanine Matthews . Winslet's commitment was officially confirmed in March. The final roles went to Ashley Judd and Tony Goldwyn as Natalie and Andrew Prior .

Reviews

The film received mixed reviews. At Rotten Tomatoes , the film received a positive rating from only 42 percent of the 224 reviewers .

Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times praised the film for "staying close to the book". He also found “ divergent [as] an acceptable film adaptation” with “a strong couple” formed by Shailene Woodley and Theo James.

Phil Heron from DVD-Forum.at said that the film was “a derivative work” and “is based on previous works like 1984 , Brave New World or The Hunger Games, but by far not the range or complexity of these works reached". He also criticized the implementation of the "missing [...] drama, interchangeable [...] music and scenes [...]" that look "as if it was being shot on a construction site".

The Filmstarts.de author Christoph Petersen is of the opinion that the film offers "over two thirds of the running time [...] a fast-paced, entertaining teenage dystopia", "but the conspiracy that finally comes to the fore [...] not for a second credible "is.

Carlos Corbelle writes about the protagonist Tris on Entania.com: “Your path from inexperienced recruit to self-confident fighter is not particularly innovative, but it is neatly told.” However , he also considers the end of Divergent to be problematic: “It only gets annoying when when the events of the emerging conspiracy tumble towards the end of the film and lead to an unconvincing and hastily told resolution. "

Gunther Baumann praises the visual implementation on filmclicks.at: “The small conflicts that are unwound here one after the other have a lot of drive and are very well illustrated. The (nightmarish) dream sequences that are interspersed over and over again are particularly impressive. "However," the dialogues suffer from hollow swurps between kitchen psychology and extremely questionable political theses. "

Sequels

On May 7, 2013, Summit Entertainment announced that it was already working on the script for the film adaptation of the novel The Destiny - Deadly Truth . In mid-December 2013, Summit Entertainment announced the launch dates of the second film The Determination - Insurgent on March 20, 2015 and the third part on March 18, 2016 for US cinemas. Neil Burger also announced that he will not be returning as a director for the sequels. After the studio had officially announced the second film, filming began in May 2014. The third part of the novel was, as it became known in April 2014, split into two parts. The release date for Part 1, The Determination - Allegiant , was March 18, 2016, Part 2, The Determination - Ascendant, was due to be released a year later. However, since Shailene Woodley (the leading actress) did not renew her contract, a release on the scheduled date could not be kept.
