During her studies she met the producer Starsmith , who had a great influence on her music and who would later become one of the producers of her debut album. After dropping out of college, she moved to London , where she performed in British pubs . There she was discovered by the record label Polydor and signed in September 2009. The debut single Under the Sheets was not released under this label, but under the smaller indie label Neon Gold Records , so that the pressure on them was not too great. The song reached number 53 on the UK charts. In October 2009 she toured the UK with British singer Little Boots . An appearance at Later with Jools Holland in October 2009 brought her breakthrough. She won the Brits Critics' Choice Award at the BRIT Awards 2009 as the most promising newcomer for the coming year. She was also named as a favorite for 2010 in the BBC's Sound of 2010 list , which made her only the second artist after the singer Adele , who won both prizes in the same year. Shortly after her nomination for the BBC's Sound of 2010 list , her first EP , An Introduction to Ellie Goulding , was released on December 20, 2009 by Polydor exclusively via iTunes and Zune . This contains the songs Under the Sheets as well as Wish I Stayed and three videos. The EP was later released in America, where it got a new track list.

In March 2010 their debut album Lights was finally released and immediately reached number 1 on the UK album charts. Her second single, Starry Eyed , had previously reached number 4 on the UK charts. The song was part of the soundtrack of the comic book adaptation Kick-Ass and was also used in the last episode of the first season of the series Awkward . The third and fourth singles were the songs Guns and Horses and The Writer , which reached number 24 and 19 respectively. In August 2010 she released an EP called Run into the Light , which contains remixes of some of Lights' songs.

The title track Lights was originally planned to be released on November 1, 2010 as the album's first single. However, these plans were abandoned in favor of the release of a cover of the song Your Song by Elton John on November 12, 2010, which should be part of the Christmas advertising of the British company John Lewis . The song became Goulding's biggest hit to date and reached number 2 on the UK singles chart. She got to sing the song and some other covers live at the wedding reception of Prince William and Duchess Kate .
