The Pukkelpop has been an annual rock music festival near Hasselt in Belgium since 1985 .

The festival is organized by the Humanist Youth of Leopoldsburg ( Humanist Jongeren van Leopoldsburg , Hujo for short ). Most of the staff working on the festival site work there on a voluntary basis, which gives the festival a private flair despite its now immense size.

history

The first Pukkelpop took place in 1985 with seven bands in front of 2,500 guests on a soccer field . Until 1992 only one stage was set up on which bands such as DAF , Sonic Youth , Ramones , Faith No More , Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds , Public Enemy and the Beastie Boys played. In 1989, Pukkelpop was canceled at short notice because the two headliners The Pogues and The Sugarcubes canceled their performances a few weeks before the festival.

In 1993, two stages were set up for the first time. The 18 bands, including The Smashing Pumpkins , Rage Against the Machine and Tool , attracted 38,000 visitors. In the following year a third stage was set up, 33 bands played in front of 47,000 visitors. In 1995, 38 bands from three stages filled 60,000 visitors with sound. For the first time, the festival was held over two days. The number of stages, bands and thus also visitors rose continuously over the next few years. In 1996 there were already 60 bands on five stages and in 1997 80 bands on six stages in front of 70,000 spectators.

The festival, which was held over three days for the first time in 2001, came to 115,000 visitors and saw 150 bands on eight stages. In 2007 194 bands played in front of 130,000 festival-goers.

The 2010 festival was overshadowed by two deaths. On the one hand, Charles Haddon, singer of the British synth-pop band Ou Est Le Swimming Pool , fell to his death from a telephone pole, and on the other, Michael Been , sound engineer for the band Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and singer / bassist of The Call , suffered one Heart attack.

During the first day of the festival in 2011, two stages and several canvases, tents and metal structures collapsed on August 18, 2011 in a violent storm with storms, heavy rain and hail, which surprised visitors due to the high speed of the train. Five people were killed and around 70 others were injured. The festival was then canceled.

On the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of the festival, a compilation with 83 songs on four CDs was released in July 2015 under the title Pukkelpop 30 years .
