The Beastie Boys were one of the first and most successful hip-hop bands and hail from New York City . After founding member Adam Yauch died in May 2012, the Beastie Boys broke up.
history
The Beastie Boys started as a hardcore punk band in 1978 under the name "The Young Aborigines". The cast at the time consisted of Michael Diamond (Mike D), Adam Yauch (MCA, † 2012), John Berry († 2016) and Kate Schellenbach. Their musical role models were bands like Black Flag and Bad Brains . In 1981 they changed their name. In 1982 they released an EP called Polly Wog Stew and gave a few concerts in the New York area. In the same year guitarist John Berry left the band. He was replaced by Adam Horovitz (Ad Rock). In 1983 the group had another chance to record an album, but the result was not a hardcore album, but the obscure single Cooky Puss . It consisted of a joke phone call with beats underneath, indicating the first step towards hip-hop . Kate Schellenbach left the band shortly afterwards. The resulting triple line-up was the formation that existed until Adam Yauch's death. Kate Schellenbach then played with Luscious Jackson . The first two EPs were later re-released under the name Some old bullshit .
Afterwards, the musicians showed more and more interest in hip-hop. The turn to rap, a genre that only very few whites were interested in at the time, is often explained by the band members' roots in the Jewish bourgeoisie of New York, which was traditionally open to various artistic influences.
In 1985 the Beastie Boys competed in a band contest in the film Krush Groove . In the same year they had their first appearances in front of a larger audience as opening act for Madonna's “ Virgin Tour ”. With the release of their debut album Licensed to Ill (1986), produced by Rick Rubin , and the subsequent tour with the hip-hop band Run DMC , the trio made their big breakthrough. The album contained u. a. the hit single Fight For Your Right (To Party) ; through the use of sampled electric guitars, the music is considered an important crossover forerunner. The band then emancipated themselves from Rubin and moved to Los Angeles for a while. In 1989 the musicians released Paul's Boutique , a hip-hop milestone that Rolling Stone magazine later listed as one of the 500 best albums of all time. The rock music influences took a back seat. On the other hand, the critically acclaimed record initially met with little interest from the public and sold poorly. On the album Check Your Head (1992), the band went back to their punk-rock roots. The next album, Ill Communication , surprisingly produced another world hit in 1994 with Sabotage , which was an idiosyncratic mixture of punk and hip-hop.
Musicians who often worked with the Beastie Boys are Michael Schwartz alias Mix Master Mike (DJ) - he was first heard on an official album on Hello Nasty (1998) -, Mark Ramos-Nishita alias Money Mark (keyboards, vocals, Carpentry), Wendell Fite alias DJ Hurricane (DJ), Eric Bobo (percussion), Amery Smith alias AWOL (drums), Alfredo Ortiz (percussion) and the producers Mario Caldato Junior alias Mario C, Rick Rubin , John King and Mike Simpson alias The Dust Brothers .
In the meantime, the Beastie Boys operated their own label, Grand Royal .
In 2002 the American jazz flutist James Newton sued the Beastie Boys: parts of his composition Choir had been sampled for the hit Pass the Mic . Newton's lawsuit in US federal court was dismissed because the label ECM (which acted as the publisher for his recording) had assigned the rights without the knowledge of the flautist for a one-time fee of $ 1,000.
In 2004 they published as part of the Rip project . Sample. Mash. Share. of Wired magazine released their song Now Get Busy under the Creative Commons Noncommercial Sampling + license .
In 2006 the Beastie Boys published the concert film Awesome; I Fuckin 'Shot That!
In July 2009, Adam Yauch announced that he had parotid cancer. The release of the eighth studio album of the Beastie Boys, Hot Sauce Committee Part 1 , planned for autumn 2009 , had to be postponed due to his health. According to a previous announcement by the band on their website, the album was released on May 3, 2011 under the title Hot Sauce Committee Part Two . A 30-minute film entitled Fight for Your Right Revisited was also released with the album . a. Jack Black , Will Ferrell , Elijah Wood , Seth Rogen and Stanley Tucci played.
On April 14, 2012, the Beastie Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame . Adam Yauch died on May 4, 2012 as a result of his cancer. Shortly thereafter, Horovitz and Diamond announced that they would no longer perform and record music under the name Beastie Boys. In 2013 they announced a band biography that was originally due to appear in 2015.
On May 19, 2016, founding member John Berry died of dementia at the age of 52. In May 2018, Adam Horovitz and Michael Diamond announced the upcoming publication of the long-announced band biography entitled Beastie Boys Book . The book includes photos, illustrations, recipes, playlists and the Beastie Boys' own texts and was published on October 30, 2018. Guest contributions are by Spike Jonze , Wes Anderson and other contemporary witnesses .
Band name
How exactly the band name came about is not known. The claim that “beastie” is the acronym for B (oys) E (ntering) A (narchistic) S (tates) T (owards) I (nternal) E (xcellence) came about as a backronym . According to another explanation, the band members were fans of the Bad Brains and therefore also chose a name with the initials BB. A third explanation is that the name of the band goes back to an idea by John Berry.
Social / political engagement
The Beastie Boys - especially Adam Yauch - have been involved for years for women's rights and with the Milarepa Fund founded by Yauch for the International Tibet Independence Movement . Adam Yauch has been interested in Buddhism since 1992 and has been a practicing Buddhist since 1996.
