JJ Abrams , who directed the previous two films, remained as producer . This time the script was written by Simon Pegg , who plays the role of Scotty in the film . The US theatrical release was on July 22, 2016, and the film was shown earlier in some countries. The Germany premiere took place on 21 July 2016. action

The Enterprise crew is already in the third year of their five-year reconnaissance mission in the depths of space. Kirk's attempt to contact a strange people escalates when he offers an ancient artifact as a peace gift, part of an ancient weapon. He is attacked and has to be beamed back to the Enterprise by transporter , slightly injured . Kirk is exhausted from the long time in space and therefore applies, without informing his crew, as deputy commander on the huge and ultra-modern space station Yorktown . This is far out in space and is inhabited by a multitude of different living beings. The Enterprise docks there to take provisions before continuing her journey. Spock learns of the death of his older counterpart, Ambassador Spock, whereupon he also decides to leave the Enterprise to help his people rebuild on New Vulcan .

The Yorktown takes on a badly damaged ship, the captain of which is the only member of the crew. She asks the Federation for help in freeing her crew, who are being held captive in a star nebula . The Enterprise embarks on a rescue mission into the fog, but is attacked, badly damaged and boarded by countless small swarmships shortly before reaching the target planet . The swarmships first separate the warp nacelles and finally the saucer section of the Enterprise. The crew flees with escape pods, and while the saucer section crashes rudderlessly onto the planet, the enemy ships intercept most of the escape pods and capture most of the crew, leaving only a few pods scattered across the planet.

Kirk and Chekov attempt to walk to the saucer section to issue a distress signal, while McCoy and the injured Spock find evidence that the artifact originally came from this planet. Scotty meets Jaylah, a member of an alien species who was also stranded on this planet, whose family was cruelly killed by Krall and his followers. Jaylah has since been hiding from Krall in the wreckage of the Federation spaceship USS Franklin , which also crashed on the planet over 100 years ago. She kept it hidden with camouflage projectors and has since tried to repair it to leave the planet. Scotty promises to help her if she helps him free the Enterprise crew in return.

It turns out that the leader of the attackers, Krall, is in search of the ancient artifact and that the strange captain belongs to him. Her appearance on Yorktown was just a ploy to lure the Enterprise with the artifact to the planet. Kirk suspected this, however, and was able to hide the artifact on the Enterprise . Little by little, Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scott and Keenser meet again on the USS Franklin and join Jaylah in the fight against the seemingly overpowering Krall. This has meanwhile been able to take possession of the artifact. It's the last missing piece of a deadly biological weapon he tests on Ensign Syl of the Enterprise. Kirk plans to free his captured crew, which he succeeds with the help of the USS Franklin transporter modified by Scotty . After the attack was repelled by Krall's troops, Uhura recognizes him on an old video recording: He is his former captain Balthazar Edison, who extended his life by transferring the life force of other people. Edison believes he was abandoned by the Federation after his crash on the planet. In revenge, he now plans to wipe out all life on Yorktown with his new weapon by activating it in the center of the station, and makes his way there with his fleet. Kirk and his people succeed in making the USS Franklin fit for space flight again and taking off from the planet. They find out that they can destroy the swarmships by emitting a loud broadcast of music on their communication frequency. With support from the Yorktown successful, but Krall, who has now converted back to its former self, Edison can into his gun gravity-free center of Yorktown advance. At the last moment he is stopped by Kirk and thrown into space, where his bioweapon kills him. Spock and McCoy then save Kirk before he is also sucked into space.

Finally, the crew continues their five-year mission with the new USS Enterprise NCC-1701-A after both Kirk and Spock refrain from quitting service on the ship.

production

Pre-production

In the summer of 2014, the preliminary script for the film was completed. On December 22, 2014, Justin Lin was confirmed as the director of the third part of the new edition. On December 24, 2014, Orci agreed to be the next producer. At the end of May 2015, Jung and Pegg handed the first pages of the script to Lin, after which Lin confirmed on June 29, 2015 via Twitter that the title of the film would be Star Trek Beyond . At the same time, Lin gave the Star Trek fans hope that they should be informed about the progress of the production through social media. The start date in the USA has been postponed by two weeks from July 6th to July 22nd, 2016.

Staff and cast

After Abrams announced that he would not direct the film, but would be available as a producer, it was later announced that Justin Lin , who had previously been successful with Fast & Furious 6, would do this work. Lin announced in advance that he was trying to create a lot of the new worlds and civilizations that live here promised in the opening credits of Star Trek . In January 2015, Doug Jung and Scotty actor Simon Pegg were hired to work on the script.

As in Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek , Pegg slipped back into the role of chief engineer of the Enterprise, Chris Pine is in command as Captain James T. Kirk and is supported by Zachary Quinto as Spock, and also Karl Urban , Zoë Saldaña , John Cho and Anton Yelchin can be seen in their old roles as McCoy, Uhura, Sulu and Chekov.

In February 2015 was Bryan Cranston as a cast in a villainous role in the conversation, however, reported Variety on March 25, 2015 that now Idris Elba will play the villain in Thor the Heimdall embodied and confirmed these rumors later, in July 2015 on the part of the director. After it was initially assumed that Elba would play a Klingon, it was later announced that he would play an alien with a reptilian exterior and would be named Krall.

In July 2015, Sofia Boutella was confirmed as a newcomer, who was an assassin Gazelle in Kingsman: The Secret Service . She plays Jaylah. Pegg later stated that the character was inspired by a role in a film by Jennifer Lawrence and was initially just called Jennifer-Lawrence-In- Winter's-Bone . At the same time it was announced that the Indonesian actor Joe Taslim was signed. Lydia Wilson joined the crew in August 2015 .

The Italian soccer coach Carlo Ancelotti got a small supporting role as a doctor on board the USS Enterprise . The American entrepreneur Jeff Bezos (founder of Amazon.com ) also has a guest appearance.

On June 19, 2016, just over a month before the film's world premiere, Anton Yelchin died at the age of 27 as a result of an accident. His name was also added to the dedication in the credits , in addition to that of the Spock actor Leonard Nimoy , who died in 2015 .

Film music

The soundtrack was composed by Michael Giacchino , who wrote the soundtrack for Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness . During the showdown, the final space battle, the song Sabotage of the Beastie Boys can be heard in the film . In the film music, piano , clarinet , horn , drums , soft percussion and cello , but also a choir and strings are used.

At the end of June 2016, the titles of the songs on the soundtrack and the corresponding cover became known. The soundtrack includes 18 songs and was released on July 29, 2016. The cover shows the Enterprise flying through clouds. The movie's title song Sledgehammer was written by Rihanna and was released on iTunes in advance and was also featured in the film's final trailer. Rihanna is said to have written this song back in 2014. The singer-songwriter Sia acted as co-writer for this song . The soundtrack climbed in August 2016 in the US Billboard Soundtrack album chart and reached there later Place 2. In December 2016, the soundtrack as a candidate in was Oscar ceremony in 2017 in the category Best Original Score in the candidate list (long list) added from which the members of the Academy will determine the official nominations.

Marketing and Publishing

The first trailer for the film was released in December 2015. Björn Sülter from Serienjunkies.de wrote in his detailed trailer analysis: "[...] the first trailer for the new movie offers a bit of everything and not too scarce - apart from humor, unfortunately nothing that die-hard fans would recognize as being specific to the trek [ …] “The second trailer was presented on May 20, 2016 as part of a fan event in Los Angeles. An appearance at the Cannes Lions Festival scheduled for June 22, 2016 was canceled due to the unexpected death of Anton Yelchin. The third and final trailer was finally released on June 27, 2016.

The world premiere of the film took place on July 7, 2016 in the presence of Chris Pine , Zachary Quinto , John Cho , Karl Urban and Justin Lin at the Hoyts Entertainment Quarter in Sydney . On July 20, 2016, the San Diego Comic-Con International opened with the American premiere of the film . In addition to the director Justin Lin and the actors Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg and Zoe Saldana , the newcomers Idris Elba and Sofia Boutella were also present. It was the first time a film was shown on an IMAX screen outside the building, in the amphitheater of San Diego's Embarcadero Marina Park. The performance was accompanied by the 90-member San Diego Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Richard Kaufman , who played the original score by Michael Giacchino , which was also a novelty. Paramount had given the approval for this.

After the start date of the film had been postponed by two weeks in the USA, it took place on July 22, 2016. In some countries, the film was shown earlier, including Germany, where the film was released on July 21, 2016 Cinemas came. The day before, the film had already been shown in preview screenings in several German cities, for example in many UCI cinemas and some Cineplex cinemas. The film was also released on July 20, 2016 in Indonesia , the Philippines , Sweden and parts of Switzerland .

reception

Age rating

In Germany, where the film is rated FSK 12, the release certificate says: “The film works with an easily understandable good-evil scheme, whereby it is always clear that the good guys will win in the end. It is staged at high speed and contains a large number of effective fight and action scenes. Physical violence is not shown in detail or played out for its own sake, so that children from 12 years of age will not be overstrained. "

Reviews

The film was received positively, also in comparison with other films from the Star Trek franchise, and was able to convince 83 percent of the Rotten Tomatoes critics (of 216 critics in total, as of August 10, 2016).

USA Today's Brian Truitt says, "The combination of gravity, a bit of exhilaration, and old school Star Trek music make Beyond a decently fun journey to the outer edge [of the universe] . "

The film is viewed somewhat more critically by German-speaking reviewers. Andreas Borcholte says on SPIEGEL ONLINE that the film caters to “action fans and series nostalgics - but nothing more.” Although it has “some breathtaking show values” , he feels “so pragmatic for long stretches, not to say: cobbled together uninspired ” to “ like a particularly shirt-sleeved episode of the original series - right up to extraterrestrial rocks that would look like sprayed paper mache ” . Nevertheless, the whole thing has heart and is "a lot of fun" .

Justin Lin at the premiere for the film in Japan

The dpa editor Cordula Dieckmann sees humor and action combined in the film and says: “The third part of the new edition, which started in 2009, is less gloomy and thoughtful than the first two parts. 'Beyond' has a lot of funny dialogues, but also relies heavily on action as you know it from 'Star Wars' or 'The Avengers'. "

Regarding the dramaturgy of the film, Michael Schleicher from Münchner Merkur says that the proven full-throttle director Justin Lin keeps the pace surprisingly low at the beginning and takes time to establish the story, which is a little bit surprising. Schleicher describes the often pointed dialogues with allusions to earlier episodes and the addition of Jaylah, whom he describes as an exciting new character, as some really worth seeing Star Trek moments in the film.

Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter thinks the film is Oscar-worthy because of the visual effects .

The coming out of Hikaru Sulu

The fact that the character of Hikaru Sulu in Star Trek Beyond comes out as homosexual , commented George Takei , who played Sulu in the first Star Trek films, in the run-up to the release: Although he was “happy that it is now a gay character, " but " unfortunately, this is a twist on Gene's creation that he has put so much thought into. I think the whole thing is very unfortunate ” . Although Takei himself is gay, has been open about it for years, and Star Trek was already considered progressive at the time, he said he made an attempt in 1968 to persuade Gene Roddenberry to include a homosexual character on the series. Roddenberry rejected this at the time because he apparently feared that the world was not yet ready for it. In contrast, Simon Pegg, co-author said of the script, you have deliberately, "a figure chosen who already know the audience because the audience so already have an opinion of this person as a human being -. Without any prejudices play a role" Had on the other hand, a new homosexual figure was introduced, “he or she would only have been defined by their sexuality. It would always have been 'the homosexual figure' instead of being seen as the person he actually is. " Sulu actor John Cho also welcomes the character he portrayed: " That is also what I mean for us Species wish: that in future the personal orientations of people will no longer be politicized. "

According to Cordula Dieckmann from the dpa , the fact that Sulu reveals himself to be gay, lovingly put his arm around his partner and embraces the daughter they are raising fits in with the spirit of Star Trek , social, political or ideological issues. As part of the 28th Annual GLAAD Media Awards , an award from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation , Star Trek Beyond was nominated for Best Nationwide Film .

The film music

Lasse Vogt describes the film music as thematically richly penetrated and equipped with memorable melodies, which should thereby satisfy all fans. Giacchino deconstructed the well-known enterprise theme very cleverly and had fragments of it appear in many titles, which would have given him new facets. In the usual manner, Giacchino's recording of the instruments and voices was crystal clear, according to Vogt, the orchestration is detailed and goes very deep.

The film critic David Ehrlich thinks the film music is the best of the blockbusters released in 2016 and in comparison with them the Sistine Chapel .

Mihnea Manduteanu likes the wild action moments that Giacchino created with his film music and highlights the subtle choral work in the song Night On The Yorktown that gives you goose bumps and makes him think of a fairy tale. From now on, Giacchino deserves, according to Manduteanu, the same admiration and esteem that John Williams received for many years.

Gross profit

On the opening weekend, Star Trek Beyond entered the market with gross revenues of just under 59.3 million US dollars in the US and 30 million US dollars internationally. This put it at number 1 of the films that opened in the USA that weekend, but lagged behind Star Trek Into Darkness , which grossed $ 70.1 million there on its opening weekend. Ultimately, more than 158 million US dollars were made in the United States, which is also behind its predecessors Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness , which reached 257 million and 228 million US dollars, respectively. In Germany, the film also started at number 1 on the cinema charts and, with over 1.3 million visitors, is number 17 of the most-visited films of 2016 (as of October 30, 2016). The film's worldwide revenue is currently over $ 342 million (as of November 3, 2016).

The film received a number of awards and nominations, including three nominations for the 2017 Kids' Choice Awards and one nomination for Feature Motion Picture: Best Special Make-Up Effects for Joel Harlow and Richie Alonzo as part of Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards 2017 . continuation

The Hollywood Reporter reported on June 26, 2015 that Pine and Quinto will also be used in the planned fourth part of the new edition, and a few days later it was announced that the two had signed their contracts for a possible Star Trek 4 . Even Chris Hemsworth should have an appearance in the film, but it was announced on 11 August 2018 that both Pine and Hemsworth have dropped due to differing salary from the project. A realization of Star Trek 4 is therefore currently unclear. In January 2019, it was initially announced that Part 4 had been abandoned for an indefinite period of time ( indefinitely canceled ). In November 2019, however, it was announced that the project will continue and that Noah Hawley will both write the script and direct.
