In 2399, 14 years after leaving Starfleet, Jean-Luc Picard gave a first interview about the Romulan supernova at the time. Dahj, who was attacked by Romulan agents in her apartment but was able to kill them - to her own surprise - sees Picard on television and recognizes him as the man from her memory. She goes to Picard to ask for help. After Dahj's friend died in the attack and she doesn't want to endanger Picard, she leaves his property again. The next day, Picard visits the Starfleet Archives and discovers that the woman in a painting that Data painted about 30 years ago and named Daughter looks like Dahj. In the meantime, Dahj, who continues to be persecuted by Romulans, contacts her mother, who advises her to return to Picard because only he can help her. She finds Picard again. He tries to explain to her that she is something special, possibly a human-looking android, which Dahj does not want to admit at first. Picard suggests that they go to the Daystrom Institute together when Dahj notices that their pursuers have taken up their tracks again. She succeeds in killing several Romulans, but is then surprised by an attacker lying on the ground and dies. Picard is looking for Dr. Agnes Jurati at the Daystrom Institute and learns that Dahj must have a twin.

14 years ago, so in the year 2385, there was a rampage of the androids on Mars, whereupon it was forbidden to produce further androids. During an investigation into Dahj's apartment with the Romulan Laris, Picard learns that Soji, Dahj's sister, cannot be on Earth and that the Zhat Vash , a Romulan secret organization that is actually just a myth, could be responsible for the attack. Picard's doctor, who already knows him from Stargazer , visits Picard in his apartment and certifies that he is in the best of health except for a small imbalance in the brain, which was already indicated in yesterday, today, tomorrow ( TNG 7.25 & 7.26). He then tries in vain to get command of a spaceship from Starfleet to find and save Soji. In a conversation with Dr. Jurati learns from Picard that Dahj's entire identity was only created about three years ago. While trying to get hold of a spaceship and crew by other means, Picard contacts his former colleague Raffi. He does not yet know that the Romulans have infiltrated Starfleet and that they have now learned of his project due to his visit there. Meanwhile, Soji begins a love affair with the Romulan Narek at the Romulan Recovery Station, a destroyed Borg cube.

Shortly after the androids rampage on Mars and before the Romulan supernova 14 years ago, Picard confronted Starfleet with the decision to either help him evacuate the Romulans or release him from Starfleet. This decided against Picard and accepted his resignation, which also had negative consequences for his colleague Raffi, as she relied on Picard's help. Therefore, when he arrives at the moment, she does not speak very well of him. However, based on Picard's descriptions, she still gets him a spaceship with a pilot. Meanwhile, Dr. Jurati was visited by Starfleet security chief Commodore Oh and asked about Picard's visits. In the meantime, Picard finds himself on the ship La Sirena and gets to know its Captain Rios, who is also the pilot. Back on his property, the Romulans attacked Picard with the two Romulans Laris and Zhaban who lived with him, as well as the arriving Dr. Jurati can fend off together. During the interrogation of a surviving attacker, those present learn that Dahj's twin sister is said to be the destroyer from Romulan mythology. Soji also experiences the same thing on the Borg cube, but cannot yet classify the meaning. It is also revealed to her that her sister should be dead. Her alleged mother tells her, however, that she is doing well. Dr. Jurati joins Picard's crew. When the ship arrives again, Raffi is already on board, but she has other goals and just wants to fly with her. The four of them start the journey to Freecloud , where Bruce Maddox is said to be, who created the androids that triggered the catastrophe on Mars, and who probably also created the twins.

Picard is shortly before the androids rampage 14 years ago in a new Romulan colony on Vashti, where he is waiting for the arrival of new resettlement vans with the Qowat Milat , Romulan warrior nuns . In doing so, he builds a friendship with the orphan boy Elnor, who also lives with the Qowat Milat, tells him stories and teaches him fencing. Shortly afterwards he learns of the androids' rampage and has to leave in a hurry. In the present, Picard persuades Raffi to take a detour to the planet that is now in a dangerous sector. There he would like to hire a Qowat Milat and look after Elnor. On the planet, the Federation is no longer on good terms, as it abandoned the Romulans after the rampage. The Qowat Milat welcomed Picard with open arms. He meets Elnor, who has completed his warrior training, but can never belong to the warrior nuns due to his gender, and wants to take him with him, but he initially refuses. Picard then goes back to the Romulan settlement, gets into an argument with Romulans, but is able to escape with the help of Elnor, who now accepts Picard's offer. Meanwhile, Soji tries to find out more about the destroyer on the Borg cube . Her love affair with Narek deepens, but his sister Narissa urges him to find out more about Soji, otherwise she would use violence, as she did with Dahj on Earth. In the orbit of Vashti, an old Romulan Bird of Prey attacks, whose attack can be repulsed by the help of a second spaceship. The injured pilot, Seven of Nine, is beamed on board from this exploding ship.

Seven comes to his rescue, but it's too late for him and she kills him out of grace. Two weeks before Picard's crew arrives on Freecloud , a casino planet, Maddox seeks shelter from his client Bjayzl from the Tal Shiar , who has destroyed his laboratory. However, this silences him and takes him prisoner. After the arrival of the La Sirena with Picard and his companions, they work out a plan to save Maddox. This stipulates that all but Dr. Beam Jurati undercover to the planet and Seven of Nine acts as bait for Bjayzl, who Borg is looking for to cannibalize. Unaware that Seven and Bjayzl have a common past, the plan initially works: the living Maddox is brought to the meeting point as an exchange for Seven. When Seven arrives at the meeting point and realizes that she only helped to get to Bjayzl, who was responsible for Icheb's suffering, the situation gets out of hand. Meanwhile, Raffi meets her son, who accuses her of abandoning him and his father over an alleged conspiracy. He doesn't want anything more to do with her, whereupon Raffi leaves him and his pregnant Romulan girlfriend and secretly returns to La Sirena . At the same time, Seven wants to kill Bjayzl, who however suggests exchanging Maddox for her life and not putting a bounty on the La Sirena crew. At Picard's urging, Seven agrees and everyone beam on board. There, the injured Maddox reveals to Picard that Soji is on the artifact , the Borg cube, and that he has sent the two androids to earth and the cube to uncover a conspiracy. Three weeks before the current events, Commodore Oh had a mind-melding with Dr. Agnes Jurati, where she showed her the destruction of a planet. Jurati got a tracker from Commodore Oh and asked to join Picard's crew. In the present, Lieutenant Narissa Rizzo kills several ex-Borg drones on the Borg cube in order to blackmail Hugh about Picard's whereabouts. Meanwhile, Picard and Soji arrive on the planet Nepenthe, where they meet Kestra Troi-Riker, the daughter of Will Riker and Deanna Troi. This leads them to their parents, and there is a warm reunion of the former Enterprise crew members. Soji is traumatized and distrusts all strangers, but is finally convinced by Kestra that she can trust Picard. On the La Sirena , Rios discovers that Narek is following the ship and cannot be shaken off. Rios suspects Raffi of having received a tracker from the Romulans on Freecloud and takes Agnes into his trust. However, Agnes secretly knows that the Romulans are following her tracker and replicates uranium hydride, which she injects into herself to destroy the tracker. This works, but due to the neurotoxic effect she falls into a coma. Meanwhile, Elnor and Narissa fight on the Borg cube, in the course of which Hugh is killed. Elnor finds Hugh's Fenris emergency transmitter and activates it. On Nepenthe, Kestra finds out with the help of a friend, Captain Crandall, that Soji's home planet is in the Ghulion system, which is in the Vayt sector. Picard and Soji say goodbye and are beamed onto La Sirena to make their way there.

14 years earlier, a group of Romulan agents led by the semi-Romulan Vulcan Oh met on the planet Aia , which is located in an artificially created system of eight suns. There they await the warning and during a ceremony they witness a vision that was installed by a lost people several hundred thousand years ago to warn of the arrival of the "destroyers". Between apocalyptic images, the face of an artificial life form can be seen for a split second, which is transformed into the face of Data. Only Narissa and her aunt Ramdha survive the vision and receive the information from Oh that they have to turn to Mars to prevent another downfall. In the present, Agnes Jurati regains consciousness on the La Sirena , admits her recruitment by Commodore Oh and the assassination of Maddox, and claims to volunteer at the nearest naval base, Deep Space 12 . With the help of the five holographic emergency programs, Raffi finds out that Captain Rios had to witness nine years ago how his mentor and supervisor at the time on the USS Ibn Majid , Captain Alonzo Vandermeer, committed suicide after he - also at the instigation of Oh - two envoys of one unknown world, one of whom was named Jana and was an image of Sojis. At the urging of Soji, the crew decides to fly to their home planet immediately without waiting for the squadron that Picard had previously wrested from Admiral Clancy. In order to get to this planet as quickly as possible, the La Sirena opens a transwarp channel of the Borg. When they get there, they are chased by a cloaked Romulan spaceship. In the meantime, Seven of Nine has appeared on the Borg cube and comes to Elnor's aid. She succeeds in setting the cube's repair mechanisms in motion and briefly connecting the remaining Borg in a kind of micro-collective in order to use them against the Romulans. However, Narissa opens the airlock of the cube, so that a large part of the Borg is blown into space and killed. The Romulan fleet then takes off towards Soji's home planet. After Seven has separated from the collective again, the remaining ex-Borg take over the Borg cube.

Shortly after each other, the La Sirena , Narek and the Borg cube arrive at Coppelius, the fourth planet of the Ghulion system, and are forcibly brought to the surface by orchid-like objects. The crew of the La Sirena first set out for the crash site of the Borg cube, where they meet Elnor and Seven of Nine. Using the cube's long-range sensors, they identify 218 Romulan warbirds that are about two days away. Elnor and Seven stay behind to get the Borg cube's defense systems going again while the rest of the crew make their way to Coppelius Station, which is inhabited by androids and operated by Dr. Altan Inigo Soong is headed. This claims that the biological son of Dr. To be Noonien Soong, the creator of Datas. Sutra, Jana's sister, performs a mind-melding with Agnes Jurati and realizes that the "warning" is actually not addressed to the Romulans but to the androids and comes from an alliance of artificial life forms that protect against destruction offer organic life. Narek is captured, but Sutra secretly lets him escape for her own ends. Thereupon he escapes in the direction of the Borg cube. Meanwhile, Saga, an android that Narek had previously guarded, is found dead. Sutra uses the death of the android woman as an opportunity to spread fear of all organic life forms among the others. You and Dr. Soong have a plan to use a beacon to summon the alliance of artificial life forms to destroy the Romulan fleet (and all organic life). Picard is placed under arrest after proposing a rescue mission with the La Sirena that Rios and Raffi are working to repair. Dr. Jurati, however, remains free to talk to Dr. Soong to work together on a mental transference project previously managed by Bruce Maddox. Dr. Soong had previously made a golem for this , just as he had previously built the bodies of the rest of the android siblings, for which Bruce Maddox had programmed the mental abilities. Meanwhile, the Romulan fleet, led by Commodore Oh, is still 24 hours away.

After Raffi and Rios have repaired the La Sirena , Narek teams up with them to destroy the androids' beacon together with them. Meanwhile, Picard is freed from Maddox's lab by Agnes, while Sutra and Soji are busy activating the beacon. Raffi, Rios and Narek manage to smuggle some grenades into the android village. When they try to throw a grenade at the beacon, Soji intercepts it and throws it into the air, where it detonates. Dr. Soong finds out that Sutra was responsible for the death of the Androidin saga and deactivates it, but Soji continues to stick to the plan to activate the beacon. Meanwhile, Picard and Agnes return to La Sirena and steer it into space to stop the Romulan fleet. This was previously only stopped briefly by Coppelius' orchid defense system. With the help of a "repair device" that Saga had previously given Rios, Picard and Agnes manage to trick the Romulans into believing that there is an entire fleet of La Sirenas . However, when the Romulans meet the real La Sirena in battle , the other holograms disappear. Seven is able to prevent Narissa from intervening on the Borg cube at the last moment and kills her. A squadron of Starfleet, led by Riker, shows up just in time. In order to prevent an impending conflict, Picard talks to Soji via subspace transfer and can finally convince them, by giving his life for the androids, to deactivate the beacon so that the unknown synthetic life forms that are called up are not caused by the one that is just opening Portal. Picard dies as a result of the effects of the irumodic syndrome, but his consciousness can shift to the levels originally intended for Dr. Soong specific golem will be transferred. In the circuits of the transmission device he encounters the consciousness of Data, which had previously been rescued from B4 by Maddox. In a conversation, Data tells Picard that he would like to die, because only the finiteness of life makes all the things that one experiences unique. After Picard was revived as a golem, he granted Data this wish and deactivated his consciousness. Then the La Sirena starts with the now enlarged crew, to which Seven and Soji, who sees herself as an adventurer, have just joined.

criticism

Some overall assessments were positive. At SZ.de , for example, it was said that the series would find “the right balance between nostalgia and reference to the present” and, with Picard, bring back a figure “who is extremely topical and relevant.” The Stuttgarter Zeitung spoke of an “extraordinarily ambiguous, diverse drama that offers more than just pretty science fiction show values. ”Other critics, however, were not so convinced. The critic from Golem.de criticized the background story of the season as "quite uninspired from the plot of the video game series Mass Effect stolen" and Picard's fate at the end of the season as "incredibly trite". Another problem is the absence of Starfleet except for the last five minutes of the season. The decay of Starfleet as an organization appears "like a decay of the old Star Trek values". The RP online reviewer found the main story “not particularly deep or nuanced. Obviously you have nothing more to say than the templates that you used - and that presented their stories in a more sophisticated, intelligent and complex way. And unfortunately that also makes it irrelevant. "

Some praised the character Picard and its actor. At Golem.de, for example, it was said that, fortunately, Stewart did not succumb to making his role appear younger than he is, and that the presentation is more realistic as a result. The critic of Heise.de highlighted Stewart as great and his acting achievements as leaving nothing to be desired. In the FAZ it was acknowledged by Dietmar Dath that the “complex social moral constellation” resulting from Picard's attitude towards extraterrestrials and androids, the series “high above the weakly motivated minority allegory stickers and emancipation poses of the so far at best mixed disappointment 'Star Trek: Discovery '”. The critic of RP online, however, was not satisfied with the protagonist and complained that Picard did not behave like "the legendary captain", was no longer thoughtful, deliberate, sovereign, no longer cited classical literature, was no longer a leader, but rather " like the cliché of a stubborn, complacent, opinionated and at times anything but compassionate old man ”.

Some critics criticized the narrative speed of the series in the first episodes as too slow. The season started “a little slowly” and was “lengthy in places in the first few episodes” (Golem.de); is as "a thriller initially very rambling (and rather simply constructed, as you will notice later), but then quite captivating" ( Ruhr-Nachrichten ); and one attends “a very long exposition that tries to please through the complexity of its construction and through the constellation of the moral-philosophical and identity-theoretical questions on which it is based, rather than through significant narrative momentum” ( Zeit online ).

Some critics expressed themselves about the dramaturgy, the narrative speed and the density of the plot but also with great rejection. In Der Spiegel, for example, it was said that the series was falling back into the “neatness of television in the nineties”: “The pictures are as clean as the dramaturgy, which consistently explains what is happening to the audience twice. Conflicts knock politely and remain nicely clear. "The critic of RP online said:" The main story progresses so slowly over the ten episodes that a two-hour film would have been enough. "
