production
One of the scriptwriters' goals for season three was to create an atmosphere of paranoia among the station crew and the Federation. The fact that the founders belonging to the Dominion are able to transform themselves into flawless replicas of human bodies and thus also replace members of the Federation creates a completely new threat to the Federation. From this danger, the viewer first learned in the episode Heart of Stone ( Heart of Stone , Season 3).
The authors intended to take up this threat again in the last episode of the third season, in the form of a cliffhanger , which would be resolved in the first episode of the fourth season. Paramount decided against a cliffhanger, which is why the authors had to quickly prepare a new script for a stand-alone episode, in which they nevertheless integrated the intended threat atmosphere. The originally planned, cross-season double episode in which the founders or shape shifters infiltrate the population of the earth has now been completely postponed to the beginning of the fourth season.

“ The representation of the characters is always more convincing. The acting looks routine and convincing, but often a bit more polished than in previous seasons. For example, the confrontations between Odo and Quark or Quark and Kira, although present, are no longer so sharp-tongued. […] The third season of DS9 is once again 'round' through and through, ie it offers a bit of everything - exciting stories, new developments and an overarching, ongoing story. Unfortunately, there are also some really mediocre episodes that are not entirely boring only because the overarching story continues in them. "

“In retrospect, however, the deliberately slow and deliberate further development of the storyline around the Dominion turns out to be an extremely wise decision: The story developers realized early on that they had something in their hands that would shape the series to its end, and one Such a large approach should be treated with care and played with relish.
