production

One of the scriptwriters' goals for season three was to create an atmosphere of paranoia among the station crew and the Federation. The fact that the founders belonging to the Dominion are able to transform themselves into flawless replicas of human bodies and thus also replace members of the Federation creates a completely new threat to the Federation. From this danger, the viewer first learned in the episode Heart of Stone ( Heart of Stone , Season 3).

The authors intended to take up this threat again in the last episode of the third season, in the form of a cliffhanger , which would be resolved in the first episode of the fourth season. Paramount decided against a cliffhanger, which is why the authors had to quickly prepare a new script for a stand-alone episode, in which they nevertheless integrated the intended threat atmosphere. The originally planned, cross-season double episode in which the founders or shape shifters infiltrate the population of the earth has now been completely postponed to the beginning of the fourth season.

Reviews

The 26 episodes in Season 3 are of an impressively high quality overall, with very little unevenness. One major factor in this is that many of the episodes contribute to the overall story arc in some way, but even the more basic "stand-alone" episodes are solid.

- Holly E. Ordway: DVD Talk

“The 26 episodes of the third season are of an overall impressively high quality, with very few bumps. The main thing is that many of the episodes contribute to the overall story arc in some way, but the rather simple, stand-alone episodes are also solid. "

The representation of the characters is always more convincing. The acting looks routine and convincing, but often a bit more polished than in previous seasons. For example, the confrontations between Odo and Quark or Quark and Kira, although present, are no longer so sharp-tongued. […] The third season of DS9 is once again 'round' through and through, ie it offers a bit of everything - exciting stories, new developments and an overarching, ongoing story. Unfortunately, there are also some really mediocre episodes that are not entirely boring only because the overarching story continues in them. "

- Dirk Schönfuß : DVD Center

Having a constant oppositional force […] as a constant pressure upon the show turned out to be a wonderful idea, and many would agree that Deep Space Nine finally came into its own and stepped out as a fully functional entity within the Trek canon; the show was no longer timid and clumsy from being Roddenberry-less, it became more gutsy and daring than its predecessor, […] and of course, a lot less like Babylon 5. […] The acting […] has solidified into a veritable well-oiled machine, where each cast member seems at ease with one another, and the small, complex nuances of interactions begin to flourish. Avery Brooks's over-the-top dramatic delivery starts to make sense as Sisko spends a lot of time being very stressed out. […] Rather than being forced, out of necessity, to take the Trek universe in daring new directions or innovate the formula into new territory, by giving the cast a fancy starship […] it changes the focus of the show slightly, and retreats to Next Generation-esque formulaic situations.

- Adam Arseneau: DVD verdict

“Having a permanent opposing force as a permanent pressure on the series turned out to be a wonderful idea, and many would agree that Deep Space Nine eventually evolved into something of its own and emerged as a fully functioning entity within the Trek canon; the series was no longer shy and clumsy without Gene Roddenberry , it became bolder and more daring than its predecessor, and of course, is far less like Babylon 5 . The drama has solidified into a veritable, well-oiled machine in which the cast members are relaxed about each other, and the small, complex nuances of interaction begin to flourish. Avery Brooks' exaggerated dramatic performance starts to make sense as Sisko spends a lot of time under tension. Rather than being forced out of necessity to lead the Trek universe in bold directions or to expand the formula into new territory by giving the cast a fancy spaceship, the focus of the series has been changed a bit and into formulaic situations , similar to the next generation . "

“In retrospect, however, the deliberately slow and deliberate further development of the storyline around the Dominion turns out to be an extremely wise decision: The story developers realized early on that they had something in their hands that would shape the series to its end, and one Such a large approach should be treated with care and played with relish.
