Star Trek V: On the Edge of the Universe (Original Title: Star Trek V: The Final Frontier ) is an American science fiction film from 1989. It is the fifth Star Trek cinema film and is based on the television series Starship Enterprise . This time it was directed by William Shatner , who also wrote the script and again played the lead role of Captain James T. Kirk in the film .

In this film, the Enterprise-A is used for the first time , which was put into service at the end of Star Trek IV .

action

The planet Nimbus III, located in the neutral zone, a demilitarized space area, was once a joint project of the Federation, the Klingons and the Romulans . Settlers from all three warring peoples should live peacefully like in a free trade zone. But the plan failed, and Nimbus III degenerated into a wasteland that is now inhabited by nomads, robbers and outcasts.

In this situation Sybok appears, who, although he is Vulcan, behaves extremely emotionally. With a kind of hypnosis he succeeds in influencing the settlers and capturing the consuls of the three peoples. The Federation then sends the spaceship Enterprise under the command of Captain Kirk to the planet to restore order. To begin the mission, Kirk and his commanding officers must break off their vacation together in Yosemite Park just as Kirk and McCoy try to get Spock to sing along to the nursery rhyme Row, Row, Row Your Boat by a campfire . Kirk lands on the planet with his team. The mission seems unsuccessful when Kirk's team is ambushed by Sybok, with whom the consuls are now working together. Kirk and his team are captured, and Sybok takes possession of the Enterprise . Kirk learns from Spock that Sybok rejected the strictly logical, Vulcan upbringing as a child and was therefore banished by his people.

On board the Enterprise , Kirk, Spock and McCoy are locked in a holding cell. Spock reveals that Sybok is his half-brother. Sybok reveals his real plans to the three: He wants to break through the "Great Barrier" in the center of the galaxy with the help of the Enterprise , since he suspects the mystical planet "Sha-Ka-Ree" behind her, which is believed to be the cause represent paradise and be inhabited by God .

In addition, Sybok has brought Kirk's rest of the crew, including Uhura and Sulu, but with the exception of Scott, under his intellectual power. With Scott's help, the three of them are able to escape from the cell and through a turbo shaft, but are soon picked up again. The cult leader's subsequent attempts to influence Kirk, McCoy and Spock, however, fail.

The Enterprise is the first spaceship ever to cross the barrier. You will find what you are looking for and discover Sha-Ka-Ree. Kirk, Spock, McCoy and Sybok break up to the surface and encounter a being who pretends to be God. Kirk has doubts and is also right: The apparition is just a powerful energy being that the Enterprise wants to use to escape the planet. Sybok realizes his mistake and sacrifices himself to enable his comrades to escape. With the help of a Klingon spaceship that has also appeared, Spock, McCoy and later also Kirk can escape Sha-Ka-Ree and return to the Enterprise .

Back in Yosemite Park, the three of them sit around the campfire singing Row, Row, Row Your Boat .

Reviews

According to the review website Rotten Tomatoes , only 21% of 42 film reviews examined rated the film positively.

"Interplanetary humbug on the verge of ridiculousness, formally average."

“Shatner's direction remains prosaic, albeit professional in a television-like manner: the special effects lag almost five years behind the current state of the art and are more frightening - especially when it comes to the blue glowing fog tank barrier and the presentation of 'God' as a white pillar of light visual lack of imagination; the plot itself finally turns out to be a banal re-edition of Star Trek: The film , whereby the ambivalently drawn V'ger has mutated into an exclusively evil, unspecified entity for the sake of simplicity. Background and miscellaneous

  • The English original title takes up the second line of the text from the opening credits to the series (English: "Space - The Final Frontier"), which was lost in the German translation ("Der Weltraum - Unendliche Weiten"). The German title Am Rande des Universum is a mistranslation; the Enterprise flies to the center of the galaxy .
  • The shooting was Star Trek V u. a. in Yosemite National Park in California . The mountain that Kirk climbs around is El Capitan . For the scenes in which Spock talks to the climbing Kirk, Shatner hung on a mountain backdrop that had been built in a parking lot with a mountain view. Buildings made from Spaceship Enterprise: The Next Century were used for the interior sets . The film shows the corridors and the medical station (which was converted for the film).
  • A different ending was actually planned. ILM's animation technicians were supposed to be doing the effects for the showdown, but were busy working on Ghostbusters II and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade .
  • Shatner later tried to convince Paramount to make another budget available for the DVD edition in order to stage the originally planned ending, but Paramount refused.
  • The name of the god-planet Sha-Ka-Ree is a play on words and is supposed to remind of Sean Connery . This was originally intended for the part of the Sybok. When Connery was unavailable due to simultaneous filming for Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade , Laurence Luckinbill was hired for the role and the planet Sha-Ka-Ree (as a reminder that Connery was supposed to be part of the game) christened. The Swedish actor Max von Sydow was also scheduled for the role of Sybok .
  • Melanie Shatner , William Shatner's daughter, appears as Kirk's assistant.
  • Production costs were approximately 27.8 million US dollars .
  • The film opened in German cinemas on November 16, 1989.
