Leonard Simon Nimoy (born March 26, 1931 in West End , Boston , Massachusetts - † February 27, 2015 in Bel Air , Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor , film director , film producer , author , musician and photographer . He achieved international fame with Star Trek in the role of Mr. Spock , in which he could be seen between 1965 and 2013, with interruptions over a period of almost fifty years, in Raumschiff Enterprise and several film and television productions based on it.

Nimoy's parents, Max Nimoy and Dora (née Spinner), were Jewish Orthodox , Yiddish- speaking immigrants and came from Isjaslav , in what is now western Ukraine . Leonard Nimoy grew up in Boston with his father, who ran a hair salon , his mother, who was a housewife, and with his older brother Melvin. After graduating from high school, Nimoy studied acting at Boston College and the Pasadena Playhouse . In 1971 he studied photography with Robert Heinecken at the University of California, Los Angeles . He also completed a Masters Degree in Bilingual Education from Antioch College ; later he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Antioch University . He received another honorary doctorate from Boston University .

In 1953, Nimoy joined the United States Army Reserve and resigned as a sergeant after 18 months . Although its military records were destroyed in a fire in 1973, some details have been reconstructed. So he spent most of his time at Fort McPherson in East Point, Fulton County , Georgia and served, together with the future actor and dancer Ken Berry , in a unit of the special services that focused on the entertainment of the troops.

Nimoy was married twice. He was married to actress Sandra Zober from 1954 to 1987, and with her he had two children. His son from this marriage is the director Adam Nimoy . Leonard Nimoy was married to actress Susan Bay from January 1, 1989 until his death.

On February 6, 2014, Nimoy announced on Twitter that he had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) ; He advised his 808,000 followers on Twitter to quit smoking. Nimoy died of complications from his lung disease at his Los Angeles home on February 27, 2015 at the age of 83.

Nimoy found his final resting place in the Garden of Solomon at Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery in Culver City , California .

Career

Nimoy gained his first acting experience as a child actor . In 1951 he got his first small role in the film Queen for a Day and then played in various films and at the theater. He was best known to a wide audience for his role as the Vulcan Mr. Spock in the Star Trek franchise , for which he was nominated three times for an " Emmy ". Alongside this, he played roles in television series such as Cobra, Take Over , Columbo and TJ Hooker .

Nimoy also worked as a director. In 1987 he received the “ShoWest Award” for Three Men, Another Baby , the American remake of the French feature film Three Men and a Baby . He made his directorial debut in 1973 with an episode of the Night Gallery series . Further television productions followed until he made his first feature film in 1984 with Star Trek III: In Search of Mr. Spock . Two years later, he also directed the sequel Star Trek IV: Back to the Present . In the following years he turned to other projects beyond Star Trek as a director , including: a. he made some comedies. Nimoy last appeared as a director in 1995. Nimoy was rarely active as a screenwriter, most recently working on the story development for Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Land .

After Star Trek was deposed , Nimoy played in the secret agent series Kobra, taking over as Paris . He replaced Martin Landau there, who had demanded a fee that was too high for the producers and then had to leave the series. Landau was offered the role of Mr. Spock before Nimoy in the early 1960s , but he declined.

This was his last acting award after he had already been honored with the Life Career Award in 1989, 21 years earlier .

In 2015 the asteroid (4864) Nimoy was named after him.

Leonard Nimoy's best-known speaker was Herbert Weicker , who almost always gave him his role as Mr. Spock (in the series Raumschiff Enterprise , the video synchronization of the animated series The Enterprise as well as the first six Star Trek films and in a guest appearance in Raumschiff Enterprise - The next century ) lent his voice.
