Jackie DeShannon (born August 21, 1944 in Hazel , Kentucky as Sharon Lee Myers ) is an American singer and songwriter who was one of the first female songwriters of the rock 'n' roll era and has written several hit songs since 1960.

After the record company Liberty Records had doubts as to whether it would be successful under its real name, it first changed its name to "Jackie Dee" and finally to "Jackie DeShannon", after an Irish ancestor with the name Shannon.

Life

Early career

DeShannon is the daughter of the farmer couple Sandra Jean and James Erwin Myers. The musically interested parents encouraged their daughter to sing country songs on a local radio station at the age of six. At eleven she had her own radio program there. The family later moved to Aurora , Illinois , mother's hometown, where the father opened a barber shop. After a year the family moved to Batavia , Illinois, where the daughter attended high school.

Her first recordings as Sherry Lee, Jackie Dee and Jackie Shannon were not very successful, but her versions of the country songs Buddy and Trouble were heard by rock 'n' roll singer Eddie Cochran , who made a trip to California and a Organized meeting with singer and songwriter Sharon Sheeley . In 1960, Sheeley and DeShannon formed a songwriting partnership that soon produced hits like Dum Dum for Brenda Lee and I Love Anastasia for The Fleetwoods .

In the same year she was signed to Liberty Records and recorded several singles by 1963, which were unsuccessful. Only Faded Love reached number 97 on the US Hot 100 in February 1963. The breakthrough came with Needles and Pins and When You Walk in the Room , which only reached low chart positions in the US but became top 40 hits in Canada , Needles and Pins even reached number 1. Both songs later became hits for The Searchers .

In the following years, her work for Liberty Records focused primarily on writing new songs. Her own recordings of country ballads, rockabilly , gospel and teenage pop songs were less popular. During this time she met artists like Elvis Presley and made friends with the Everly Brothers and Ricky Nelson . She had a role in the teenage film Surf Party and sang alongside Bobby Vinton .

When the Beatles started their first US tour in February 1964, Jackie DeShannon was part of the tour program (George Harrison played guitar with her) and achieved worldwide fame. The guitarist Ry Cooder played in their back-up band at the time .

In 1965 she supported the folk rock band The Byrds , who recorded DeShannon's song Don't Doubt Yourself Babe as a thank you on their first album . The Byrds also accompanied the singer on an early demo recording of her song Splendor in the Grass .

In the same year she stayed in England for a long time , where she, together with Jimmy Page , wrote the hit singles Dream Boy , Don't Turn Your Back on Me and several songs for Marianne Faithfull , including the top ten Hit Come and Stay with Me . In England she also appeared on the TV show Ready Steady Go! on.

Successful love songs

When she returned to New York, she and Randy Newman wrote songs like She Don't Understand Him and Did He Call Today Mama? and You Have No Choice for Delaney Bramlett . In March 1965 she recorded What the World Needs Now Is Love , composed by Burt Bacharach and Hal David , and had her first top ten hit in the USA. In the following years she appeared regularly in TV shows, toured the USA in 1967 had a role as a folk singer in the film C'mon, Let's Live a Little , at the side of Bobby Vee .

Although she continued to write numerous songs and recorded records, she only had another hit in 1969 with the single Put a Little Love in Your Heart and the album of the same name. The follow-up single Love Will Find a Way was also a modest hit in the charts.

In 1970 she moved to Atlantic Records and moved to Los Angeles. Her albums Jackie and Your Baby Is a Lady , recorded there, could not achieve the commercial success of their predecessors. In 1973, she sang on the album Hard Nose the Highway of Van Morrison .

In 1979 Put a Little Love in Your Heart was performed as the final song at the Music for UNICEF concert and was broadcast worldwide.

Later career

DeShannon has not been able to achieve top ten successes herself since 1969, but her compositions have repeatedly become hits through the interpretations of other artists. In 1974 she wrote the songs Queen of the Rodeo and Bette Davis Eyes for her album New Arrangement , together with Donna Weiss . The latter song received the Grammy for Song of the Year 1981 in the version by Kim Carnes .

Other hits were the versions of Breakaway ( Tracey Ullman , 1983), Put a Little Love in Your Heart ( Annie Lennox and Al Green , 1988, and Dolly Parton , 1993) and When You Walk in the Room ( Pam Tillis , 1994).

Jackie DeShannon was portrayed by singer Liz Phair on an episode of the television series American Dreams.

DeShannon is married to singer, songwriter and film music composer Randy Edelman , who is her third husband. The first husband was Irving "Bud" Dain, a senior executive at Liberty Records, whom she married in 1966. She had a previous relationship with Jimmy Page, who wrote the song Tangerine on the occasion of the separation in early 1965 and recorded it with Led Zeppelin in 1970 .
