Bobby Vee , actually Robert Thomas Velline , (born April 30, 1943 in Fargo , North Dakota , † October 24, 2016 in Rogers , Hennepin County , Minnesota ) was an American rock 'n' roll and pop singer who celebrated success with songs like Take Good Care of My Baby in the 1960s .

After Buddy Holly's death , Vee became the lead singer of The Shadows (US) and went on tour with her. This was the beginning of Vee's career.

biography

His first single Susie Baby was released in 1959 on the small record company Soma; However, when the first regional successes set in, the record company bought Liberty Vee out of the contract and in June Susie Baby was released as the first Liberty single. That record and the next two all landed in the bottom quarter of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. His breakthrough came with the album Devil or Angel, published in August 1960 , with which he reached number 6 in the charts and for which he received his first gold record . His next record, Rubber Ball , was also gilded and reached number 6 in the US charts; it was also his first success in the UK, where the record came in at number 3. With the song Take Good Care of My Baby penned by Carole King , he landed a number one hit in the USA and Great Britain in 1961 . His follow-up hit Run to Him made it to number 2. With all singles released in 1962, Vee made it into the top 20, the track The Night Has a Thousand Eyes reached number 3 in early 1963. Until 1970, Vee stayed with at least one, mostly several titles per year a permanent guest in the Billboard Top 100 Charts, but very few of the singles made it into the Top 40. He had his last big hit in 1967 with Come Back When You Grow Up , which reached number 3. In the same year he played Jesse Crawford in the musical film C'mon, Let's Live a Little by David Butler , whose last film as a director, alongside Jackie DeShannon a leading role.

He became friends with Bob Dylan , who played briefly in Vee's band before his breakthrough.

Although he was no longer a great success from the 1970s, Bobby Vee was regularly on stage until 2012. In 2011 he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's . In 2014 he released his last album. In August 2015 his wife Karen, with whom he had been married since 1963 and had four children, died. He died in October 2016 at the age of 73 as a result of his illness.
