Disasters

  • 1276 : The third conflagration within a year after March 28 and April 16 means that around two thirds of the city of Vienna are now destroyed.
1802: Puentes dam (after the dam breach)
  • 1802 : The dam of Puentes in Spain breaks and causes the greatest disaster in Spanish hydraulic engineering history with 608 deaths.
  • 1908 : The Japanese small cruiser Matsushima goes down after an ammunition explosion near Magong on the Pescadores Islands . Of the 347 crew, 206 died.
  • 1941 : South-east of the rocky island of Rockall , the British passenger and cargo steamer Nerissa , which is on its way to Liverpool with both military and civilians, is attacked by the German submarine U 552 with three torpedoes without warning and sunk within a few minutes. 207 people are killed.
