Jerry Lordan (born April 30, 1934 in Paddington , † July 24, 1995 Shrewsbury Hospital, Shropshire ), actually Jeremiah Patrick Lordan , was an English composer, singer and musician. He gained fame in the 1960s through the compositions Apache , Wonderful Land , Atlantis and Diamonds , which were created in collaboration with the British instrumental band The Shadows .

Life

Lordan was born and raised in Paddington on April 30, 1934. After graduating from Finchley Catholic High School, he did his military service in the Royal Air Force . While serving in the army, he demonstrated his talent as a stand-up comedian , with which he should also earn a living, he also tried his hand at singing and songwriting. In 1958, the song he wrote, A House, a Car and a Wedding Ring, was produced and released by Mike Preston on the Decca Records label. Even if the original Preston version was not very successful, the later cover version by American Dale Hawkins achieved the sales figures hoped for. With I've waited so long , Lordan made it into the British charts in May 1959, and he also made it into the charts with three titles he sang himself.

The collaboration with the instrumental band The Shadows resulted in success. With the title Apache Lordan conquered the British charts for the first time (August 1960), the arrangement worked out together with Cliff Richard and the band was covered in the following years by at least 36 different well-known artists, including The Ventures , The Spotnicks , Ricky King and Jørgen Ingmann . A total of 76 different cover versions of this song are currently known. The Shadows version was listed as the top seller of 1960 in New Musical Express magazine. Lordan then stopped singing his own titles in order to have more time to compose.

With the title Wonderful Land he had another number 1 hit in Great Britain with The Shadows. The title is still one of the most successful British singles today. A short time later, Atlantis and Mary Anne were created , with Diamonds he achieved another number 1 hit with the now retired Shadows musicians Jet Harris and Tony Meehan . Scarlett O'Hara reached number 2 on the UK charts.

The collaboration with Cliff Richard , Shane Fenton and Louise Cordet was also successful . With the end of the surf-rock era, Lordan's economic downturn began. The title A Place in the sun , written together with his wife Patrina ("Patty"), did not make it into the Top100, and the collaboration with the band "The Onyx" in 1974 did not bring any decisive success.

Lordan had a brief stint in acting in 1977 in the British sex suit Come Play With Me , in which he appeared at the request of director George Harrison Marks.

In the 1980s, Lordan worked on his comeback, but these songs never made it to publication.

Jerry Lordan died on July 24, 1995 of acute kidney failure at the age of 61. On October 25, 1995, a memorial service was held in his honor at St Martin-in-the-fields Church in London.

Lordan was married twice.
