The Shadows is a British instrumental - rock band , which - has been active for over 50 years and has recorded mainly in the 1960's success - with shorter interruptions.
Band history
In 1958 the band was founded in London under the name The Drifters as a backing band for Cliff Richard . Under pressure from the US band of the same name , they were renamed The Shadows in 1959 . Jet Harris suggested this with a round of "Ale and Lime" in the " 2i's Coffee Bar " after the four musicians had always stood in the "shadow" of Cliff Richard.
The original band members were Hank B. Marvin (guitar), Bruce Welch (guitar), Jet Harris (bass) and Tony Meehan (drums). In the early 1960s, Harris and Meehan (successful titles: Diamonds and Scarlett O'Hara ) continued as a duo. Brian Bennett took over the drums in The Shadows, and Brian "Liquorice" Locking and John Rostill played in succession on bass .
In the 1960s they played both with Cliff Richard and solo. In 1960 they had a huge hit with Apache , which was followed by four more number 1 hits, including Wonderful Land , which was number 1 in the UK charts for eight weeks - longer than any Beatles hit. Apache became one of the most important samples in hip-hop in the 1980s, but in a cover version of the Incredible Bongo Band from 1973. In 1968 Welch left the group before an upcoming tour of Japan . As a substitute - only for the tour - Alan Hawkshaw was hired, who is often referred to in the literature as the least known Shadows member.
In 1973 there was a reunification. For Rostill, who was still under contract with Tom Jones , the Australian John Farrar (guitar, bass, vocals) joined the band.
John Rostill committed suicide on November 26, 1973 by overdosing on sleeping pills. Bruce Welch found him lifeless in his house. In 1975 they took part in the Eurovision Song Contest with Let Me Be the One and came second behind the Dutch band Teach-In with Ding-Ding-A-Dong .
In the early 1970s, the leaders of the Shadows had another band project called Marvin, Welch & Farrar , which later shrank to Marvin & Farrar .
After Rostill's death, the remaining Shadows members (Marvin, Welch and Bennett) decided to use the services of contract musicians for performances and concerts. The musicians should not get the status of regular band members. On the stage on bass were: Alan Tarney (including 1975 in Paris, Olympia), Alan Jones and Mark Griffiths. Cliff Hall worked on the keyboard instruments up to and including 2004, for the 2005 tour ("Together again for one last time") Bennett's son Warren took over the part as keyboardist.
In 1990 Marvin left the Shadows. In 2001 Welch and Harris supported an acquaintance of Marvin, Roger Field , who wanted to bring Marvin and the Shadows back together. In 2004 there was a Farewell Tour and a new recording called Life Story , which was released on CD and vinyl together with the old successful tracks.
In 2005 they finished their long and successful career with "The Shadows - The Final Tour". They played in many big cities around the world, such as B. Amsterdam, Birmingham, Paris and Dortmund.
To mark the 50th anniversary of the formation, the Shadows toured Europe and Asia with Cliff Richard in 2009.
