Lynsey de Paul (born Lyndsey Monckton Rubin , born June 11, 1948 in Cricklewood , London , † October 1, 2014 in Chelsea , London) was a British singer and songwriter.
life and career
As a lyricist of the song Storm in a Teacup sung by the group The Fortunes , she had her first hit in the British charts in early 1972. Half a year later she was able to place another title there with Sugar Me , this time sung by herself. It reached number 1 on the Dutch, Belgian and Spanish singles charts.
A German-language version of On the Ride , a hit single for Continental Uptight Band , made it into the Dutch charts. Frank Farian also recorded a de Paul song and released it as a single in 1973. She also composed "Dancin '(on a Saturday Night)" with Barry Blue, who reached number 9 on the official German single charts in 1973.
In 1974 she was the first woman to receive the Ivor Novello Award ; her 1973 song Won't Somebody Dance with Me won the Best Ballad award . Another Ivor Novello Award for the single No Honestly followed in 1975, this time in the category Best Theme Song . In her 1976 recorded song If I Don't Get You the Next One Will , she processed the end of her affair with Ringo Starr .
With the song Rock Bottom (dt: 'Forever'), which she wrote with Mike Moran , she took part in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1977 and took second place. The song reached top positions in the singles charts in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland.
In total, she wrote 14 songs between 1972 and 1977 that hit the UK charts. In addition to her music career, she also worked as an actress in television series and musicals. In 1992 she released a video on self defense called Taking Control .
In the 1980s, Lynsey de Paul produced, among other things, two classical albums with music by Handel and Bach . She also released the single Air on a Heartstring / Arrival of the Queen with pan flutist Horea Crishan .
Lynsey de Paul died on October 1, 2014 at the age of 66 in a London hospital as a result of a cerebral haemorrhage .

The leading character, Phyllis, played by Sophie Rois, sings de Paul's song Sugar Me in the 2004 Austrian film Fräulein Phyllis , directed and written by Clemens Schönborn .
The name of the psychedelic folk band Lovebomb by Elke Sachsenmaier and Niels Kaiser was inspired by the song Love Bomb by Lynsey de Paul.
