Jade Almarie Louise Ewen (born January 24, 1988 in London ) is a British actress and singer .

In addition to a career as an actress in various television series, she initially worked as a musical singer. In 2009 she represented her home country at the Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow. In September 2009 she became a member of the Sugababes .

Life

Jade Ewen was born in Plaistow, Newham, London . Her mother comes from Jamaica , her father has British- Sicilian roots. The parents are physically disabled and do not work. Her father is blind and partially deaf , her mother only has limited eyesight. Therefore, in her youth, Jade Ewen looked after her parents as well as her younger sister Shereen and her younger brother Kiel.

Career

Ewen received her artistic training as a child with a scholarship at the renowned London drama school Sylvia Young Theater School . As a twelve year old she played Nala in the musical The Lion King at the Lyceum Theater in London's West End . After finishing school, Ewen went to New York to work with the music producer Kwamé Holland . In 2005 she signed Sony BMG with R&B band Trinity Stone . Jade Ewen, whose musical role models include Aretha Franklin , achieved her first musical success with Trinity Stone in Great Britain and Ireland as well as in Russia.

In addition, Ewen has been working as an actress in various television productions since 2003. This included the Australian series Out There as well as the British series The Bill , Casualty and Myths . In 2005 she also played the role of Donna in the television film Mr Harvey Lights a Candle .

In the annual British preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest , Jade Ewen competed against five other participants in the BBC broadcast Your Country Needs You . In the finals she won on January 31, 2009 in front of the second-placed twins Francine and Nicola Gleadall, who appeared as "The Twins" and the third-placed Welsh musical singer Mark Evans. The winning song, My Time , performed by Jade Ewen, was composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber , who also accompanied her on the piano. The lyrics are from Diane Warren . On May 16, 2009, Jade Ewen represented the United Kingdom with this song at the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 in Moscow , where she finished fifth.

Since she had already signed a contract with the record label Polydor before the Eurovision Song Contest , she began working on her debut solo album immediately after participating. Shortly after her third single, My Man , was released, she joined the British girl band Sugababes , where she replaced the last remaining founding member, Keisha Buchanan . For this reason, any further promotion for their song was canceled. My Man reached number 35 on the UK charts. Her solo album has also been postponed indefinitely, as the Sugababes have become her top priority.

Together with the Sugababes, she has released a studio album so far. Sweet 7 was released in March 2010 with a long delay (the release was originally planned for the end of 2009), as it had to re-record all of Keisha Buchanan's vocal tracks. The album reached number 14 on the UK charts. Two singles from the album were released with her, About a Girl and Wear My Kiss , which reached number eight and number seven in the British charts. In 2011 the Sugababes released the song Freedom for free on Amazon as a thank you to their fans.
