Lulu (* 3. November 1948 in Lennoxtown , East Dunbartonshire as Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie ) is a Scottish pop - singer and actress .

life and career

Already at the age of 15 Lulu became famous with her version of the song Shout by the Isley Brothers , which she performed with her group "The Luvvers". In 1965 she separated from the band and landed several single hits, including I'm a Tiger . In the USA she was in 1967 with her title To Sir with Love for five weeks at number one on the singles hit parade. That same year Lulu had a hit in the UK with The Boat That I Row . Also worth mentioning is her rendition of the David Bowie song The Man Who Sold the World , which was a top 10 hit in Great Britain in 1974.

In between, Lulu appeared again and again as an actress in various movies and especially on television (including as the mother of Adrian Mole ). In 1967 she starred alongside Sidney Poitier in the film Challenged - Young Thorns ( To Sir, with Love ) and also sang the theme song. She is also known to cineastes as the interpreter of the James Bond title song The Man with the Golden Gun (1974). In 1969 she represented Great Britain at the Eurovision Song Contest with the title Boom Bang-a-Bang and won tied with three other participants. Lulu also recorded this title in German, which also became a single hit. Lulu also recorded three other singles in German.

Together with Shakin 'Stevens , Freddie Fingers Lee , Alvin Stardust and Joe Brown, Lulu appeared on over 30 shows on the Let's Rock music show, directed by Jack Good, in 1980 and 1981 .

From 1977 to 1991 she was married to the British celebrity hairdresser John Frieda . Their son is the actor Jordan Frieda (* 1977).

In the 1990s she made a comeback with the boy band Take That and landed again at number one in the British charts . In 2002, she released an album with pop duets , which she sang with Elton John and Paul McCartney . Lulu was married to Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees from 1969 to 1973 .

While working with Take That, she was said to have a relationship with the singer of the band Jason Orange . This was denied by both on the show An Audience with Take That .

Lulu currently works for the BBC, hosting a show on Radio 2 on Sunday afternoons from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm (UK time).

Her autobiography was published in 2003 under the title Don't Wanna Fight No More .

In November 2009, Here Come the Girls started , a joint tour through Great Britain with the singers Chaka Khan and Anastacia . The program contained both own hits and cover versions. A year later the tour continued, this time with a concert in Ireland. Instead of Chaka Khan, Heather Small , the lead singer of the band M People, sang .
