Dąbrowa Tarnowska [ dɔmˈbrɔva tarˈnɔfska ] is a Polish city in the powiat Dąbrowski of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship . It is the seat of the Powiat and the town-and-country municipality of the same name with a little over 21,000 inhabitants.

Dąbrowa Tarnowska is located about 20 kilometers north of Tarnów on the Breń River in the Sandomierz Basin .
history
According to the latest findings, the first written mention of a settlement in the area of today's Dąbrowa Tarnowska comes not from 1326, but from 1422. In the period between 1691 and 1693, Dąbrowa Tarnowska received town charter . It is not possible to give a precise indication as there is no longer a document on this act. In 1772 the city came to Austria during the First Partition of Poland . In 1773 the city became the seat of a district. This also contained the much larger Tarnów, this was then changed in 1775 with a reorganization and Dąbrowa Tarnowska became part of the Tarnów district. After a further reform, the city became the seat of a district in 1855, which was changed again in 1867, but the city remained the seat of the new district. The connection to the Szczucin– Tarnów rail network took place in 1906. On September 8, 1939, the city was occupied by German troops. In July 1942, a Jewish ghetto was set up in the city, in which there were around 2,000 Jews; they were later taken to the Belzec extermination camp . The Red Army reached the city on January 17, 1945. In 1939 there were 6117 people in the city, compared to 4520 in 1945.
From 1975 to 1998 the city was part of the Tarnów Voivodeship .

The municipality has an area of about 113 km². The town-and-country community (gmina miejsko-wiejska) includes the 12 villages with school authorities.
