The synagogue was built according to plans by the architect Abraham Goldstein and financed by Eisek Stern. The interior is richly decorated with polychrome flowers and animals. The facade has two towers with entrances. From here stairs lead to the women's gallery . The building was badly damaged during the First World War and then restored.
During the Second World War , the synagogue was devastated by German occupiers and used as a department store .
In the 1970s the city became the owner of the synagogue. In 2012, a Jewish museum was opened in the renovated synagogue building , which presents the Jewish history of the region.
