Skyfall is the soundtrack by Thomas Newman to the film of the same name in the James Bond series. The instrumental soundtrack was recorded in 2012 at Abbey Road Studios in London. The soundtrack was under the label of Sony Classical Records published on 26 October 2012 in Germany. In the UK , the album was released three days later. Newman is the first time responsible for the soundtrack to a James Bond film. Nine different soundtrack composers were responsible for the 23 bond films produced by Eon to date .
backgrounds
Due to financial difficulties of the production company MGM , the work on Skyfall was delayed by several years. When these were finally cleared out, it was initially David Arnold who was scheduled for the soundtrack again after the five previous films. In the meantime he had accepted engagements for BBC's Sherlock and the Olympic Games in London , but that would not have prevented him from working for James Bond . The producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli announced on January 9, 2012 that Thomas Newman would create the film soundtrack. At the request of director Sam Mendes, he was awarded the contract. Newman has previously worked with him on the films American Beauty , Road to Perdition , Jarhead - Welcome to the Dirt and Times of Turmoil .
On October 6, 2012, one day after the 50th anniversary of the release of the first Bond film, James Bond, Dr. No , the title and the length of the respective track were published. A preview of the soundtrack was released three days later. On October 26, 2012, Sony Classical Records released the soundtrack in Germany. Previously, only the soundtrack for Casino Royale was released under the same label.
Another commonality with Casino Royale is that the title song from Adele exceptionally can not be found on the soundtrack CD. Therefor there are interpolations in the track Komodo Dragon . It is the longest soundtrack in the film series, and the title song would not have found its place on a commercially available CD.
The soundtrack contains interpolations from Monty Norman's James Bond theme , the 1962 James Bond chasing Dr. No was written. The theme itself can be heard at the end of the film about the gun barrel in a version by David Arnold from Casino Royale - it is therefore not included on the Skyfall CD .

In the United States, Skyfall was 100th on the Billboard 200 as the first Bond soundtrack since 1985, when the album for In the Face of Death was released. The song also won a Critics' Choice Movie Award , a Golden Globe and an Oscar . The title song was also nominated at the Satellite Awards in 2012 .
At the Satellite Awards, Skyfall also had to admit defeat to Argo in the “Best Film Music” category . Thomas Newman's film music was also nominated for an Oscar and won a British Academy Film Award .
Reviews
Skyfall received mostly good to good reviews. To what extent Thomas Newman was inspired by his predecessor John Barry , the evaluators are disputed. Movie Wave's James Southall praised the album with the following comment:
“Newman […] [ha] s made a fine impression […], writing a score that is not just a vibrant, very modern action thriller score - it's also one that fits perfectly into this series - and one that is resolutely his [ Newmans] own, completely undiluted by any desire to sound like someone else. "
“Newman made a good impression […], he wrote music that is not only dynamic, but also wrote very modern action thriller music - it's also one that fits perfectly into the series - and one that is consistent with his [Newmans ] is one's own, completely removed from the desire to sound like someone else. "
Steffen Thum from Cellurizon.de found words of praise for Skyfall , but when compared with Newman's previous work, he criticized the soundtrack:
“The score all round [is] successful [...] and [can] also stand on its own [...] if you deal with it a little. However, one has to realize that this is more about moods than melodies, which Newman can do, but then again it is not enough for musical size and uniqueness [...]. "
James Christopher Monger from Allmusic also shared a mixed opinion , who wrote:
“Newman […] stays true to the Daniel Craig-era penchant for swapping John Barry's iconic orchestral cues for loop-heavy yet appropriately moody and propulsive electronic elements that would have benefited from a lighter touch, which is surprising considering some of Newman's career highlights [...]. That said, the occasional tips of the hat to the past […] and some truly explosive […] and somber […] moments help to balance out the score's more red passages. "
“Newman [...] stays true to the Daniel Craig era with a preference for the overlaying John Barry-iconic orchestral performance for electro heavy, but also remains sufficiently moody and drives the music with electronic elements that would have benefited from a lighter touch, what surprisingly takes a few career highlights from Newman […]. That means, the occasional high points of the past [...] and some really explosive [...] and dark [...] moments help to balance the score for routine passages. "
