Sam Mendes
Sir Samuel Alexander "Sam" Mendes , CBE (born August 1, 1965 in Reading , England ) is a British film director and Oscar winner .
Life
Sam Mendes is the son of the writer and university professor James Peter Mendes and the writer Valerie Helene Mendes. After his parents' divorce (1970) he graduated from Oxford and graduated from Cambridge University in 1987 with a bachelor's degree in English.
In 1992 he took over the management of the Donmar Warehouse Theater in London's West End, where Mendes also directed.
After a successful career in the theater, Steven Spielberg brought him to the USA. There he shot his first feature film with American Beauty (1999). He received several Oscar awards, including one for Mendes' directing. His next film was Road to Perdition , which competed for the Golden Lion at the 2002 Venice Film Festival . In the meantime, Mendes withdrew from the film business and turned back to the theater.
In 2005 Mendes' film Jarhead was released . In 2008 he filmed the drama Times of Turmoil with Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead roles; the film adaptation of Richard Yates' novel earned Mendes his second Golden Globe nomination for best director in 2009 .
On May 3, 2009, Sam Mendes showed a theater work for the first time in Germany. His production of Anton Chekhov's cherry orchard was shown at the Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen . The main roles were played by Rebecca Hall and Ethan Hawke .
Mendes directed the 23rd James Bond film Skyfall (2012) and also directed the Bond film Specter (2015).
In 2013 he directed Charlie and the Chocolate Factory , a musical adaptation of Roald Dahl 's children's book of the same name , which was nominated for an Olivier Award .
In 2016 he was selected as the jury president of the 73rd Venice International Film Festival .
In 2019, Mendes directed the 1917 war drama , which won Golden Globe Awards in the film drama and directing categories. At the 2020 Academy Awards , the film received ten nominations, including three for Mendes himself (film, director, original screenplay).
Mendes was married to actress Kate Winslet since May 24, 2003 . In March 2010, the couple announced their separation. Mendes and Winslet have a son who was born in December 2003. He has been married to the English trumpeter Alison Balsom since 2017 .
