The Donmar Warehouse is a theater in Covent Garden , London . The theater has 251 seats and was first used on July 18, 1977.

history

In 1953, theater producer Donald Albery founded Donmar Productions, a theater project whose name is derived from the first three letters of his name and the first three letters of his wife Margaret's name. In 1961 he bought a warehouse that served as a hops storage room for a local brewery in Covent Garden in the 1870s , later as a banana ripening store, and as a film studio in the 1920s . His son Ian Albery converted the warehouse into his private rehearsal room. In 1977 the Royal Shakespeare Company acquired the building and changed the name to Donmar Warehouse in memory of its original use. The first play to be performed in 1977 was Bertolt Brechts Schweik in the Second World War , which was brought to the stage by director Howard Davies .

The previous artistic directors of the theater were Sam Mendes , Michael Grandage and, until March 2019, Josie Rourke . These brought mostly contemporary reinterpretations of classic European dramas to the stage, but also modern British and American dramas and smaller musical theater pieces . Michael Longhurst has been the artistic director of the house since 2019 .
