Michael Grandage CBE (born May 2, 1962 in Yorkshire , England) is a British theater, opera and film director and producer. From 2002 to 2012 Grandage was Artistic Director of Donmar Warehouse in London.

Life

Grandage was educated at the Central School of Speech and Drama and the Humphry Davy School. Grandage is in a relationship with Christopher Oram.

From 1999 to 2005 Grandage was Artistic Director of the Sheffield Theater , from 2002 to 2012 Artistic Director of Donmar Warehouse in London. For his work at the Donmar Warehouse, he has received the Tony Award , the Laurence Olivier Award , the Evening Standard Award , the Critics' Circle Theater Award and the South Bank Awards . He received his first Laurence Olivier Award nomination in 2001 for directing Peter Nichols Passion Play , before receiving an award in 2004 for his work on David Greig's Caligula . Two of his musical productions at Donmar Warehouse also received a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical Production and another award for Best New Musical .

At the end of 2011, Grandage founded the Michael Grandage Company for theater, film and television productions together with James Bierman, the then Executive Producer at Donmar Warehouse. In 2012 he ended his position as head of the Donmare Warehouse. In 2014, Grandage and Bierman began work on their first feature film. The film Genius , which was cast with Colin Firth , Jude Law and Nicole Kidman among others , describes the relationship between publisher Max Perkins and the writer Thomas Wolfe and is based on a biography by A. Scott Berg. The project announced in January 2016 to film the play Photograph 51 , which tells the story of the biochemist and pioneer of DNA research Rosalind Franklin , with Nicole Kidman in the lead role, has not been realized until today (2019).
