Jude Law
David Jude Heyworth Law (born December 29, 1972 in Lewisham , London ) is a British actor .
Life
The son of the teacher couple Maggie and Peter Law began his acting career at the age of twelve at London's National Youth Music Theater . He left school at 17 to take on a role in the soap opera Families (1990). From 1987 he was seen regularly in theater productions and toured Italy in 1992 with the play Pygmalion . His film career began in 1994 with roles in The Crane and Shopping . In 1994 he drew the attention of many critics with his portrayal of Michael in an edited version of Jean Cocteau's play Les Parents Terribles and was nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Newcomer . In 1995 the play was performed on Broadway under the title Indiscretions and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play in the same year . Jude Law received a Tony Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor and the Theater World Award .
Other film roles followed. In 1997 he took on the role of Lord Alfred "Bosie" Douglas on the side of Stephen Fry and Vanessa Redgrave in the film Oscar Wilde , the film adaptation of the life of Oscar Wilde . His international breakthrough came with the role of Jerome Eugene Morrow in Andrew Niccol's film Gattaca . His portrayal of Dickie Greenleaf in The Talented Mr. Ripley earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor in 2000 . From then on he played mainly in larger productions, such as in Steven Spielberg's A.I. - Artificial Intelligence or in Road to Perdition by Sam Mendes . For the role of Inman in the war drama On the Road to Cold Mountain alongside Nicole Kidman , he received another Oscar nomination in 2004, this time for Best Actor . For Mike Nichols ' relationship drama Hautnah , he and Julia Roberts , Natalie Portman and Clive Owen received the NBR Award for best acting ensemble in 2004 .
In the remakes of the films Alfie (2004) and 1 Mord für 2 ( Sleuth , 2007), Jude Law took over the roles that were played in the first film adaptations (1966 and 1972) by Michael Caine ; In the new version of Sleuth, Michael Caine himself took on the role of the older opponent that Laurence Olivier had previously played.
In 2008 Law helped director Terry Gilliam create the film The Cabinet of Dr. To complete Parnassus by agreeing to take on part of the role of the lead actor, Heath Ledger, who died on the set. Since the character of Tony goes through several transformations in the film, Gilliam changed the script for the resumption of filming so that Law only had to play the role in one episode; the other episodes were copied by Johnny Depp and Colin Farrell . The film was presented at the 2009 Cannes International Film Festival . In Sally Potter's film Rage , which was shown in competition at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2009, he plays the supermodel Minx . In the film Sherlock Holmes and its sequel Sherlock Holmes: A Game in the Shadow of Guy Ritchie , Law took over alongside Robert Downey Jr. the role of Dr. Watson . The science fiction thriller Repo Men followed in 2010 .
In 2009 he returned to the stage and played the role of Hamlet in the play of the same name by William Shakespeare directed by Michael Grandage in a production by Donmar Warehouse at Wyndham's Theater in London, in a guest appearance at Kronborg Castle in Denmark and at the Broadhurst Theater on broadway . In 2011 he played the male lead in Eugene O'Neill's play Anna Christie at Donmar Warehouse .
family
While filming Shopping , Law met actress Sadie Frost , with whom he was married from 1997 to 2003. Frost brought a son from his marriage to Gary Kemp into the relationship. Law and Frost have three children together, a daughter and two sons. He has other children with Samantha Burke, who gave birth to his daughter in 2009, and with the singer Catherine Harding, with whom he has had a daughter since 2015.

In 2011 he was a member of the competition jury at the 64th Cannes International Film Festival .
