King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is a 2017 adventure film directed by Guy Ritchie. The film was released in German cinemas on May 11, 2017 and in US cinemas one day later.

action

In the 5th century . The magician Mordred attacks Camelot with fireballs, giant war elephants and an army. King Uther defeats the attackers with the magic sword Excalibur, but is then betrayed by his brother Vortigern. While the king tries to let his wife and son flee by boat, Vortigern kills Uther's wife with a spear.

Many years later. Arthur, who was raised by three prostitutes, has become a shrewd man and an accomplished survivalist as Vortigern consolidates his reign of terror. Arthur knows nothing of his past, but when one day he pulls the Excalibur sword out of a stone, he learns of his royal origins and in the weeks that follow has visions of the night his mother died. Arthur passed out when he pulled out his sword and is now in Vortigern's hand. He wants to force him to behead himself in front of the people without resistance in order to demonstrate his power to the people.

A young magician and some rebels help Arthur escape. To overthrow the oppressor, Arthur reluctantly joins the rebellion, which includes the mysterious magician Mage. This determines that Arthur is defending himself against the sword, which is why he passes out when using it. So that Arthur accepts the sword and its origins, the magician in the Darklands uses visions to push him to his limits. Arthur finally learns what happened to his parents: After his mother was murdered, Vortigern, strengthened by black magic, killed the king. The Excalibur sword got stuck in the king's body, which turned into a stone and sank to the bottom of the lake or river. Arthur learns from the magician that Vortigern entered into an alliance with Mordred because he envied his brother the throne. Mordred betrayed the magicians allied with Uther and unleashed the black magic with which he attacked Uther. The magician Merlin then stole Mordred's staff, destroyed the magical tower from which Mordred drew his power, and created the sword Excalibur from the staff and linked it to the bloodline of Uther Pendragon.

To avenge his family, Arthur is now ready to face Vortigern and prevent the completion of the magic tower at Camelot, which would give Vortigern the same power as Mordred. Together with Arthur's friends and the rebels, they try to assassinate the tyrant in Londinium, but this fails because the rebel allies at Vortigern's court had been seen through by Vortigern and Vortigern is now setting a trap for the rebels.

While fleeing from Vortigern's soldiers, Arthur gets help from former friends, but still threatens to lose to the overwhelming numbers of enemies. At the last moment, Arthur grabs Excalibur with both hands, which he has avoided so far because of the visions from the past that are painful for him, and defeats the soldiers. Many of the people noticed this and now decide to rebel against Vortigern. Arthur escapes with most of his friends, while Vortigern bloodily suppresses the resistance in the city.

After successfully escaping, Arthur throws Excalibur into the water, disgusted by the many personal losses, and flees. The mistress of the lake hands it over to him again, along with a vision of Vortigern's future reign of terror. Arthur is now returning to his allies. While the rebels were on their way, Vortigern got the location of the hiding place out of an injured rebel and killed everyone except a little boy and the magician. In exchange for Excalibur and the promise that Arthur will come, Vortigern releases the magician. She helps Arthur when he goes to Camelot to see his uncle by sending a giant snake. This kills everyone except Vortigern and Arthur. While Arthur is fighting the soldiers outside and the people come to his aid, Vortigern kills his beloved daughter in order to gain power. Vortigern and Arthur meet in the magic tower and Arthur realizes that Vortigern has unwittingly made him who he is and defeats Vortigern.

After Arthur's magic tower is destroyed and the dead buried, Arthur terminates the contract with the Vikings, who had been promised 10,000 boys by Vortigern so that they would not attack him with their 3,000 longships. He demands that the Vikings kneel down, which they then do. Before Arthur's coronation, the friends name themselves Sirs and thus correspond to the legend of the Knights of the Round Table.

production

History of origin

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is loosely based on the Arthurian legend . The film is the prelude to a six-part series of historical adventures that go back to the legend of King Arthur and will be released in theaters in the next few years. Joby Harold , who wrote the screenplay for the film, was also commissioned to film the origins of Robin Hood in the film Robin Hood: Origins . The film was released in US cinemas in 2018.

Staff and cast

Directed by Guy Ritchie . Joby Harold wrote the script . Regarding his renewed interest in Anglo-Saxon cultural heritage, Ritchie said: “I'm English: I grew up with King Arthur and Sherlock Holmes . That is firmly connected to me. "

Originally, Idris Elba was supposed to play a Merlin-like character in the film, who would train and mentor King Arthur. He was later also discussed as an antagonist, but Jude Law finally got the role. Charlie Hunnam was cast in the lead role of King Arthur according to Ritchie's choice, while Elizabeth Olsen did not get beyond talks as a possible lead actress. On September 18, the cast with Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey became known. The French actress took on the role of the beautiful magician Mage, who will later become Arthur's wife Guinevere . On February 11, 2015, Eric Bana joined the cast; he embodies Arthur's father, King Uther Pendragon . Mikael Persbrandt was confirmed as a further antagonist role on March 6, 2015 . Djimon Hounsou took over the role of Sir Bedivere , and Craig McGinlay plays Percival . David Beckham , who worked with Ritchie in the film, codenamed UNCLE , also has a role in the film . He makes a brief appearance as the leader of a troop called Blacklegs and therefore wears black armor in the film.

Filming, equipment and costumes

The Quiraing on the Isle of Skye was one of the filming locations for the film

In February 2015, film recordings were made in Windsor Great Park , from March 2, 2015 in North Wales . In April 2015, filming continued in Conwy and Snowdonia , which is known for its mountains and scree fields. In the further course the film was shot at Tryfan and Nant Gwynant near Beddgelert and Capel Curig . In early July 2015 filming took place in the Shieldaig area , Loch Torridon and the Applecross Peninsula in Ross-shire on the west coast of Scotland . For a day they took pictures in the Quiraing , a geological formation on the east side of the northernmost peak of Trotternish on the Isle of Skye . The Isle of Skye is one of the largest of Scotland's 780 islands, and only around 10,000 people live on the 1,656 square kilometer island. The filming of films such as Snow White and the Huntsman and Prometheus had already taken place there. Location manager Amanda Stevens said, “We were looking for a magical place to portray the Darklands, a mythical place where Arthur becomes a man.” The rugged coastline made up of cliffs, beaches and lakes and the mountainous interior of the island made the Isle of Skye one of the most beautiful places in the world, away from any signs of modernity, says Stevens. Further recordings took place at Leavesden Studios in England.

For the buildings and costumes of the film were Gemma Jackson and Annie Symons responsible, who decided, everything is simple and to make matters more colorful than we know it, so Andreas Kilb of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung : "They have the castle Camelot to inflated to a chump against which the Tower of London is the purest toilet house, and digital dimensions given to the dilapidated Londinium , into which the Shakespeare's (also digital) London from Roland Emmerich's Anonymus would fit twice. And they put their king, queen and peasant actors in robes that should make the real Middle Ages green with envy. "

Sound design and film music

Dominic Gibbs was responsible for the sound design and sound editing of the film. The music for the film was composed by Daniel Pemberton , who already worked for Ritchie in the same role in the film, codenamed UNCLE . Gareth Williams assisted Pemberton on one piece . The film's closing song, the traditional The Wild Wild Berry , which also featured a trailer for the film, was sung by British folk singer and traditional music specialist Sam Lee and accompanied by Danny Cocke .

reception

Age rating

In Germany the film is FSK 12 . In the statement of reasons for the release it says: “The film is told rapidly and shows numerous monumental images and turbulent battle and battle scenes, whereby it always clearly distinguishes between good and evil. For children under the age of 12, the intensity of the action scenes in combination with the narrative speed can be overwhelming and disturbing. But from 12 year olds are able to distance themselves sufficiently. The good-bad scheme, the clear fictionality of the event and the artificial staging make processing easier for them. "

Reviews

The film has so far won over 30 percent of Rotten Tomatoes ' critics .

Peter Zander from Berliner Morgenpost says that the Arthur reboot is now a classic lower-class underdog, like the weird types from Guy Ritchie's early successes like Bube, Dame, König, graas or Snatch , with an anti-hero who deals with everyone Means refuse to be determined for higher things: “As a popcorn cinema, it works really well. King Arthur is cut fast and underlined with rocky beats. [...] There are also a few drastic 3-D effects. The true Arthur fan still has to swallow more often. The old knight striving for true greatness, noble virtues and heroic deeds does not take place here. "

Daniel Krüger from Musikexpress speaks of a wrong structure for an action film : “Ritchie takes the Arthurian legend and tries to cover it with a coolness that it doesn't need at all. Excalibur , Merlin , Mordred and the famous stone have survived the centuries without the jump cuts , video game-like battle scenes and gigantic elephants that Ritchie is now adding to the story. ”Even before the film's script can be seen, Krüger said Ritchie had his entire repertoire of wild tracking shots, heroic figures and effects. Unfortunately, the remaining two hours did not hold any surprises in store for the production, said Krüger, an action film should, in the best case, improve, with King Arthur it is the opposite.

Andreas Kilb of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung is also of the opinion that the director broke off exactly the chunk of the legend with which one could have fed the cinema community for a five- or six-part series about Arthur: “In King Arthur , everything is fought was at hand before the invention of gunpowder (and even firecrackers mysteriously make their appearance in the sky over Londinium ), but you can feel and see no trace of pain. "

Patrick Heidmann from epd Film explains that since there is hardly any other material that has been re-cooked by pop culture as often as the Arthurian legend , it is in a certain sense very consistent what Ritchie does with King Arthur: "He does not tell the classic British myth as a historical , but as a Guy Ritchie film. Why not, when as a director you already have a signature style - and a material that would not lure anyone behind the stove without a certain amount of modernization? ”But the film is still not really wild, exciting cinema, according to Heidmann.

Gross profit

After its release, the film reached number 1 on the cinema charts in France, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. The worldwide revenue from screenings is $ 148.7 million, which means that the film has not yet been able to generate its production costs of around $ 175 million. So far, the film has had 506,355 visitors in Germany.

Honors

On December 18, 2017, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that the song The Devil & The Huntsman from the film was in a shortlist of 70 songs from which the nominations in the category Best Movie Song at the Academy Awards To be determined in 2018 . On the same day, the Academy announced that Daniel Pemberton's work was on a shortlist from which nominations for the Best Film Music category would come.

Sequels

In the event that the film should be a financial success, Warner Bros. plans several sequels that use individual elements of the film. This could result in a Knights Of The Roundtable film universe comprising a total of six projects.
