Snatch - pigs and diamonds (Original title: Snatch ) is a British comedy film from the year 2000 , written and directed by Guy Ritchie .

A large part of the cast of the film was also seen in Guy Ritchie's first film Bube, Dame, König, grAS , which has many parallels to Snatch . The film follows the same ideas and motifs, but with different characters and storylines.

action

The film consists of three storylines that initially run parallel, cross over the course of the film and finally converge towards the end. These are the stories of Turkish, Tommy and One Punch Mickey, the story of the diamond robbery, the Denovitz cousin and Franky Four Fingers, and the story with Sol, Vince and Boris.

Turkish , a petty criminal London promoter for illegal boxing matches, has a problem. His assistant Tommy , who runs the common arcade, was ripped off by One Punch Mickey , a heavily mumbling Pavee , when buying a caravan . To get at least the money back, Gorgeous George , one of Turkish fighters, gets into the ring on Tommy's behalf with Mickey for a bare-knuckle- fight (boxing match without gloves). Little does Tommy know that the Gypsy is champion in this discipline, so that Gorgeous George is transported to the hospital in one fell swoop. Too bad that exactly this one a few days later is supposed to start a fight organized by the dreaded gang boss Brick Top . Without further ado, Turkish and Tommy One Punch organize Mickey as a substitute to calm Brick Top's anger over the broken fight and the lost betting income. However, Mickey does not stick to the agreement regarding the outcome of the fight. Brick Top, who kills unpopular people and has them fed on his pig farm, is now after Tommy and Turkish. After asking Turkish, Brick Top gives him another chance: he should persuade Mickey to start a new fight and make sure that he goes knocked out in the fourth round. In addition, Brick Top takes Turkish money. Mickey only wants to fight if he gets a new trailer for his mother. After Turkish Brick Top has informed about this, the latter sends his henchmen to burn Mickey's mother in her trailer and smash the arcade of Tommy and Turkish. Then Mickey starts a fight, which seems to develop exactly as agreed, but Mickey sends his opponent on the boards in the fourth round. At the same time, his relatives and friends Brick Top and his henchmen in front of the boxing hall as well as Brick Tops shoot people who are supposed to destroy the gypsy camp if the fight doesn't go as planned. Turkish then realizes that Mickey bet on himself and ripped off Brick Top.

A few days earlier, Franky Four Fingers , a gambling addicted jewel thief, stolen an 86- carat (17.2 g) diamond in a robbery in Antwerp , which he is supposed to bring to the seedy Jewish jeweler Abraham “Cousin Avi” Denovitz in New York . Before that he wants to sell some smaller stones to his cousin Doug the Head Denowitz, an equally seedy diamond dealer, in London . The Russian mafia, who pulled off the coup in Antwerp with Franky and also wants to steal the diamond, sets a trap for him in one of Brick Top's betting shops. Boris "The Blade" Yurinov, local representative of the Mafia and ex-KGB agent, hires the two black casual criminals and pawnshop owners Sol and Vince to rob the said betting shop and the Franky inside and give Boris the stolen briefcase with the diamond to hand over. Vince was given a pit bull at a deal with the gypsies who kept running back to their camp. The two set off with Tyrone, a fat and inexperienced getaway driver, and the dog for the attack, which goes terribly wrong - and kidnap Franky in the hustle and bustle. Then the three are not only hunted by Brick Tops henchmen who are supposed to avenge the attack on the betting office, but also by cousin Avi, who has come to London from New York, and "Bullet Tooth Tony", a violent "specialist in such cases" and contract killer. Avi and Tony are looking for the missing Franky "Four Fingers" and the diamond. Meanwhile, Sol, Vince and Tyrone get Boris to give him the briefcase with the diamond. While they wait for Boris, they force Franky to open the suitcase and discover the diamond. They want to be involved in the gem and reveal Boris' name to Franky. Boris then shoots Franky, chops off his arm to which Franky has chained the suitcase, and goes home with the suitcase. After Brick Top has found Sol, Vince, Tyrone and Bad Boy Lincoln, a friend of Sol and Vince who is supposed to clean up Franky's body, and wants to feed them to the pigs, they offer to buy him out with the diamond. Boris has since been tracked down by cousin Avi and Bullet Tooth Tony, who take the stone from him. But through several curious car accidents and a shootout in a pub, in which Boris is killed, Vince and Sol manage to take the stone and they want to bring it to Brick Top. Avi and Tony can track them down beforehand, but shortly before they get the diamond in Sol and Vince's pawnshop in the back room, it is eaten by Vince's pit bull. Avi then shoots wildly to hit the dog, but the dog jumps through an open window and runs to the gypsy camp. Unfortunately, Avi shot Tony and flies back to New York. Sol and Vince set out to clean up Franky and Tony's bodies and get the dog out of the gypsy camp. But shortly before the abandoned camp they are stopped by the police who find the bodies in the trunk of their car. At the same time, Turkish and Tommy go to the gypsy camp to become Mickey's promoter. There they only meet the police and the pit bull that Tommy takes away. As they drive back from the camp, they see Sol and Vince being arrested. Vince recognizes the pit bull on Tommy's arm and points it out to Sol.

Since the pit bull squeaks while barking, Turkish and Tommy take him to a vet. In his stomach he finds a plastic pig, a dog toy that the dog ate in Tyrone's car while waiting for the betting shop robbery, and the 86-carat and a digested shoe. The two then want to sell the diamond to Doug the Head, who in turn calls cousin Avi. The sequence from Cousin Avi's Journey by Plane can be seen again and the film ends.

characters

The Irish pavee "Mickey O'Neil" or "One Punch Mickey", who boxes in " bare knuckle " fights - boxing without boxing gloves - is portrayed by Brad Pitt. Mickey speaks with an accent that is very difficult to understand (referred to as gypsy gibberish in the film), and it is difficult to filter out individual words from the tangle. He and his clan do not miss any dirty business, for example he sells a broken caravan to Tommy.

"Franky-Four-Fingers" is a gambling addict gangster played by Benicio Del Toro. He has a weakness for expensive suits and cigars. For example, he is on the phone with Avi while a tailor fits him into various suits. His name comes from the fact that he was once unable to pay his gambling debts and his finger was cut off.

"Bullet-Tooth-Tony" is played by ex-professional soccer player Vinnie Jones . He is a hit man who is known for his brutal but "effective" methods of obtaining information from important men like the Jewish jeweler Doug "The Head", through whom Abraham Denovitz knows him, as well as from smaller men like the secondary character Mullet is feared. His name comes from the fact that he received six bullets in an attempted murder and still survived. He had two of these balls used as teeth.

"Boris - The Blade" or "Boris - The Walking Target" is played by Rade Šerbedžija and owes its name to his agility and tenacity. He is a contact for the Russian Mafia in London and was a KGB agent. Besides, Boris earns his living selling manipulated weapons to unsuspecting men like Tommy who are too deeply absorbed in self-protection.

"Turkish" , played by Jason Statham, is a petty criminal boxing promoter who organizes illegal fights and arcade operator who is content with his existence and wants to avoid any trouble with powerful and dangerous gang bosses like Brick Top. On the side, however, he repeatedly has to struggle with problems, which are mainly caused by his partner Tommy. The name of Turkish comes from a Turkish Air plane that crashed his parents.

"Abraham Denovitz" , known as "Cousin Avi", is a seedy New York diamond dealer who commissioned Franky-Four-Fingers to steal diamonds in Antwerp. He's afraid of flying (that's how he drinks whiskey before take off) and hates England like the plague. But his greed for profit is greater, so he comes to London to look for Franky Four Fingers and the missing diamond. He is played by Dennis Farina.

"Brick Top" is a well-respected gang boss from London, with whom you shouldn't be in the chalk because then you never get out of there again. He doesn't make empty promises and is known for his brutality and ruthlessness. He is always accompanied by his two thugs, John and Errol, who do the dirty work for him. And he'd rather walk over corpses (fed to Lancastershire pigs) than allow even one mistake. So has z. B. Mickey won a fight he should lose, and for that Brick Tops men burned down his mother's trailer while she was sleeping in it and smashed Turkish's play library.

"Tommy" is Turkish's partner who repeatedly ends up in trouble because of his carelessness. He doesn't really think about it and is naive , so Mickey could give him a broken caravan and Boris a revolver with a broken firing pin . Because of his friendly and naive manner he is unpopular with Brick Top, he thinks he is the breeding poodle of Turkish. Tommy thinks his name comes from a cannon ( Tommy Gun  - was often used by Mafiosi in New York around 1930 ) but Turkish knows that it bears the name of a 19th century ballet dancer.

Reviews

“A brilliant gangster film parody, which gets its pace mainly from the rapid changes within the individual episodes. The narrative ingenuity is sometimes at the expense of plausibility, and the macabre humor contrasts with some very brutal scenes. "

"Heated and funny London gangster thriller from England's new star director Guy Ritchie (Jack, Queen, King, Weed) ."

- DVD & Video Report

“The follow-up to the gangster comedy Bube, Dame, König, grAs , with author-director Guy Ritchie once again laconically interweaving quirky and frightening characters, harshness and comedy in a tricky plot. Although feelings of recognition are inevitable, Snatch is also convincing , although the pace, the density of the plot and the characters could overwhelm some viewers. "
