Revolver is a gangster film (action, crime, drama) by the writer and director Guy Ritchie from 2005 in which Jason Statham plays the lead role. It was released directly on DVD in Germany on November 20, 2008.

action

Dorothy Macha is involved in illegal games across the city. He controls these underworld games with the help of three thugs who act as the three Eddies .

Green, who spends seven years in solitary confinement for covering up Macha when his thugs shoot his sister-in-law, unexpectedly turns up at Macha after his release and challenges him in a game of chance. Macha agrees, assuming Green will let him win. When he does not comply, he offers him an "all or nothing" game, which Green also wins. When one of his people tries to take the winnings, there is a shootout, but Green is not injured and can leave the casino.

While in prison, Jake Green learned a specific strategy from the book: Mathematical Structure of Quantum Mechanics to win every game ( called The Formula in the film ). At the same time he creates two alter egos , whom he names Zach and Avi. A chess master and an ingenious trickster, qualities that he embodies himself, which the viewer only reveals through quick flashbacks shortly before the end of the film, when it turns out that his opponent, the Mafioso Macha, is plagued by similar paranoia . Green imagines that his imaginary fellow inmates broke out and promised to take him with them, but they didn't. They later told him (or his imaginary conscience) that they had always wanted to take him with them, but at the same time asked whether he would have been willing to pay the price, namely the return of the stolen money. Mr. Gold is either another facet of Green's imagination or a metaphor for the king of the game of chess: the film continually refers to a game that is essentially played between Macha and Green. Green is black, Macha is white and each action by the two is a move to be made.

Reviews

  • A few critics praised Guy Ritchie's visual presentation, music, timing, and dialogue, which he incorporated into the film, and attested it a break with his previous style. In many reviews one finds that the film is difficult to understand and should be watched several times in order to fully understand it.
  • On the Rotten Tomatoes review platform, however, only 17% of the reviews submitted were positive.
  • The film was not very successful in British cinemas, so it did not make it into German cinemas, but was released directly on DVD in Germany and Austria on November 20, 2008 .

Soundtrack

According to director Guy Ritchie, the music was originally intended to be similar to that of the previous films Jack, Queen, King, grass and Snatch - Pigs and Diamonds , but he decided on several new compositions during the course of production.

The music itself is an experimental combination of acid jazz , synth rock and new music . Among other things, Beethoven's moonlight sonata , a remix from 2raumwohnung and Ennio Morricone's piece Mucchio Selvaggio can be heard and parts of the Lacrimosa from Mozart's Requiem (KV626) appear at several points in the film . Repeatedly used particularly subliminally, the driving bass of Richie Hawtin's " Plastikman - Ask Yourself" can be found in the film.

Trivia

Continuity failure

After about half an hour of the film, Green is sitting with Avi at a game of chess while he talks about the ax murderer twins. He moves his queen and offers Avis (white) king check with her. Avi's only possibility now would be to move the king away - you can see that in silence - instead he beats Green's rook with his lady. That would have been an illegal move - but from the positions of the pieces it can be seen that the second situation must have been recorded before the first. Finally, with the next move, Green beats Avis queen with the queen, declaring “checkmate”.

In the elevator scene towards the end of the film, there is no 13th floor. However, the elevator gets stuck between the 14th and 12th floors.
