Mark Strong (* 5. August 1963 in Islington , London , England as Marco Giuseppe Salussolia ) is a British actor .

Life and career

British character actor Mark Strong was born under the name Marco Giuseppe Salussolia . His parents - his mother is from Austria, his father is Italian - decided to apply for a name change . They figured that a British-sounding name would make it easier for their son in London.

After graduating from school, Strong, who speaks fluent German, decided to study law in Munich. After a year, he broke off his studies and returned to England, where he attended the Royal Holloway , a college of the University of London , drama and English literature studied. Upon graduation, he attended the Bristol Old Vic Theater School.

In addition to various roles in various stage plays, Mark Strong also had his first television appearance in the British television series After Henry (1989) at this time . After he was seen in various television series and films in the following years, including The Bill (1990) and Hot Suspicion (1993), Century followed his first role in a movie. But he continued to work in television productions afterwards. In 1996 he played alongside Kate Beckinsale in the male lead in a film adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma and alongside Sean Bean in The Snipers .

One of his most famous roles is that of Steve in the Nick Hornby adaptation Fever Pitch (1997) with Colin Firth . His appearance in It's All About Love finally brought him his breakthrough as an actor in 2003. This was followed by roles in Syriana (2005) and Roman Polański's adaptation of the Dickens classic Oliver Twist (2005). In 2007, he then stood at the side of Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert De Niro in Der Sternwanderer in the role of Septimus in front of the camera. In 2008, Strong starred in Guy Ritchie's Rock N Rolla , the second collaboration with the director after Revolver . A third time he worked with Ritchie in 2009 on the film Sherlock Holmes , in which he played Lord Blackwood.

In 2003, Strong was nominated for the Laurence Olivier Theater Award for his supporting role in a stage production of What You Want . For the role of the gay gangster in The Long Firm , he won the 2005 Broadcasting Press Guild Awards for Best Actor.

In 2018 he was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.

Mark Strong's German dubbing voices include Erich Räuker (e.g. in Der Sternwanderer ), Dennis Brandau (in Flashbacks of a Fool ) and Tom Vogt ( e.g. in Sherlock Holmes ).

Strong is married and has two sons with his wife.
