The Sniper is a sixteen-part television production by Central Independent Television for the Independent Television network . The series is based on the Sharpe novels by Bernard Cornwell and describes the experiences of the British soldier Richard Sharpe, played by Sean Bean , at the time of the Napoleonic Wars . The series, which enjoys great popularity in the UK , only ran on German television in the mid-1990s on RTL II , with only the first eleven episodes being shown. In October 2008 ProSieben showed the 15th part “The Last Battle” in the night program. A DVD box was released in November 2008 that also offers episodes 12 to 15 in German. On October 11, 2010, episode 16 The Snipers - The Last Order was released on DVD. On November 7, 2011, the 16-part complete box was released on Blu-ray. The soundtrack includes the traditional song Over the Hills and Far Away , which was lyrically tailored for the series.
Summary
At the beginning of the series, Richard Sharpe (Sean Bean) is sergeant of the 95th Rifles Regiment , which was deployed in Portugal in 1809 . When he saves the life of General Sir Arthur Wellesley alone and with one hand (one arm was injured in the attack) in the attack of a group of French horsemen, he is promoted to lieutenant by Wellesley . This is an unheard-of exception at this time, as officers are “gentlemen”, usually nobles, and buy their officers' licenses . Sharpe is in command of a special unit of the 95th Rifles (called “chosen men” in the film). Among them is Private Patrick Harper ( Daragh O'Malley ), who is later promoted from Sharpe to Sergeant and eventually Sergeant Major and becomes his best friend.
Wellesley and his intelligence officers, including Major Michael Hogan ( Brian Cox ) followed by Major Nairn ( Michael Byrne ), Major Mungo Monroe ( Hugh Ross ), and Major General Ross ( James Laurenson ), find that Sharpe is an officer with exceptional talent , and therefore often assign him and his “chosen men” special jobs.
Although he receives support from both Wellesley and his officers, Sharpe has to defend himself against conceit and prejudice about his simple origins. As a result, he makes a number of powerful enemies.
Nevertheless, Sharpe's successes ensure his advancement within the army. At the end of the coalition wars at the Battle of Waterloo, he therefore held the rank of lieutenant colonel .
Awards
The series won the RTS Television Award and was also nominated several times for the BAFTA TV Award.
