Bernard Cornwell

Bernard Cornwell , OBE (born February 23, 1944 in London ) is a British writer, best known for the novel series about Richard Sharpe, which is set at the time of the Napoleonic Wars and from 1993 as a 16-part TV series with Sean Bean in the Main role was filmed.

Life

His father was a Canadian aviator and his mother was with the Women's Auxiliary Air Force . He was given up for adoption and raised with a family of Christian fundamentalists in Essex , whose last name he was given as Wiggins . After leaving the family, he took his mother's maiden name: Cornwell .

Cornwell studied history at London University , worked as a teacher and then went to the BBC . There he worked for ten years in the television department. In Belfast he met his current wife Judy, an American. In 1980 the couple emigrated to the USA , to Cape Cod . There Cornwell was refused the green card that would have allowed him to pursue a profession. So he began to write novels again under the name of Bernard Cornwell, as he did not need a work permit.

Cornwell's literary breakthrough came with the adventures of Richard Sharpe, a British soldier in the Napoleonic Wars . This series now comprises over twenty books. Some of the novels were implemented in several television films with Sean Bean as Richard Sharpe (German title: Die Schärschützen ). In addition, he wrote other series of novels as well as individual novels with largely historical content, including the Hundred Years War , the American Civil War and England at the time of Alfred the Great . He wrote two series of novels together with his wife under another pseudonym . In 2003 he had his official name changed back to Cornwell.

In 2006 he was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain .
