Peter William "Pete" Postlethwaite , OBE [ 'pɒsəlθweɪt ] (born February 7, 1946 in Warrington , Cheshire ; † January 2, 2011 in Shrewsbury , Shropshire ) was a British actor .

Life

Postlethwaite was initially a teacher at a monastery school . Later he gained decades of stage experience: He joined the theater group Manchester Royal Exchange, Liverpool Everyman and later with the Royal Shakespeare Company on. Since the mid-1970s, he initially took on mostly small film and television roles, the first major success came in 1988 with Distant Voices - Still Life . In this autobiographical, award-winning drama from director Terence Davies , Postlethwaite played the beating father of an English working-class family. He became widely known in 1993 for his appearance in the film In the Name of the Father .

This was followed by major and minor supporting roles in Hollywood productions such as Dragonheart , Forgotten World: Jurassic Park , The Usual Suspects , Æon Flux and the Shakespeare adaptation Romeo + Juliet , in which he took on the role of Father Lorenzo (Friar Laurence), as well as in the 2010 film Inception . Steven Spielberg , who worked with Postlethwaite on two of his films, called him "probably the best actor in the world".

Postlethwaite's conducting movements in the film Brassed Off are very accurate. In an interview, he explained that he had rehearsed every gesture similar to his dialogues, analogous to Tara Fitzgerald's finger movements on the flugelhorn (to the astonishment of the professional musicians responsible for the soundtrack), while other colleagues actually mastered brass instruments , such as Ewan McGregor or Jim Carter .

Postlethwaite lived in Shropshire, near the village of Wistanstow. He was married to Jacqueline Morrish and had two children. His son William has already taken on his first acting roles. Pete Postlethwaite died on January 2, 2011 of complications from cancer.
