action
Prince Hamlet of Denmark , a melancholy university student, learns shortly before his father's funeral that his mother, Gertrude, will marry his father's brother, Claudius. Horatio, a friend of Hamlet, learns that his father's ghost is still alive and that he can be found on the battlements of the castle. The ghost then informs Hamlet that he has been poisoned, that the perpetrator is Claudius and that he is to be avenged. Hamlet then wants to bring the truth to light.
The drama takes its course and ends with the prince's death.
criticism
“Zeffirelli focuses on the conflict of a man who is by nature a man of action and who is plunged into an existentialist crisis by the revenge order. Without radical new approaches to the interpretation, but convincing through good craftsmanship and a top-class actor ensemble. "
background
With period costumes and backdrops, Hamlet was shot on a budget of $ 20 million in Dover Castle , Dunnottar Castle and Blackness Castle .
As in Romeo and Juliet, the dialogues were adopted 1: 1 and little freedom of interpretation was allowed in order to realize the drama as authentically as possible.
Remarks
- Both Zeffirelli and Gibson have made a name for themselves as directing a Jesus film . Zeffirelli filmed Jesus of Nazareth in 1977 , Gibson 2004 The Passion of Christ .
- A mistake in the film concerns the choice of location for Helsingør . While Helsingør is actually flat, the film shows it as hilly.
