Il giovane Toscanini (often also: Young Toscanini ; German: “The young Toscanini”) is an Italian-French feature film ( biopic , costume film ) in English by director Franco Zeffirelli from 1988. The film was made for a consortium of Italian and French Film and television companies produced. The film is based on a material by Ennio De Concini .

action

The film tells an early part of the life of the famous Italian conductor Arturo Toscanini (1867–1957). After completing his studies, Toscanini received his first engagement as a conductor in the orchestra of Claudio Rossi, with whom he went on tour to South America. In Rio de Janeiro he falls in love with the young Margherita, but also tries to convince the aging soprano Nadina Bulichoff, who is a lover of the Brazilian emperor, to take part in a planned production of the opera Aida . Nadina put her career on hold for this love affair, but became depressed and longs for a comeback. She is the idol of Toscanini's childhood and so he does everything he can to help her. Since he abhores slavery, which is still widespread in Brazil, he also tries to influence the diva and the emperor.

Production and reception

The production of the lavishly, but in part little-profiled, film cost an estimated 14 million dollars. It is produced in color and 35 mm. The main actor was the 21-year-old C. Thomas Howell , who made his film debut in 1982 as a supporting actor in the American film E. T. - The Extra-Terrestrial and played his most important role in 1983 in The Outsider .

For 56-year-old Elizabeth Taylor, appearing in front of a film camera was the first after an eight-year break in cinema during which she had only worked for television. The American soprano Aprile Millo lent Taylor her singing voice. After The Taming of the Shrew (1967), it was Taylor's second collaboration with Zeffirelli.

The world premiere took place at the Venice Film Festival on September 5, 1988 and was - mainly due to its script - such a failure that it was not released internationally. The film has not yet been shown in German-speaking countries.
