action

David Axelrod (17) and Jade Butterfield (15) are madly in love with each other and go beyond any limit. First they sleep together by the fire in the evenings, and Jade's mother Ann watches them from the stairs. Afterwards, David quietly sneaks into the house every night to be with Jade, which results in Jade not getting enough sleep and sagging at school. Then the father Hugh makes a decision that Jade and David will not be allowed to see each other for a month until the end of the school year. A schoolmate tells David that he once set his parents' house on fire and was later celebrated as a hero, and that the mother never learned the truth. David goes to Jade's house in the evening, and after the party is over there and all the guests have gone home and the family went to sleep, he lit the house by putting a match in a wet pile of newspapers. He walked away from the house for a moment, then came back and rescued the family to be celebrated like a hero. A little later, however, he admits his act and is sentenced to five years probation for arson. He then comes to a psychiatric clinic, where he writes letters to Jade, but the clinic does not send them. Because of his parents, he is released and has returned home in Chicago. He learns from his father that Jade has moved to New York with her family. Shortly afterwards he goes to New York, and when he gets there he stands in front of Ann's door and talks to her, then he looks at her addresses where Jade lives. He finds out she lives in Burlington, Vermont. David goes to the bus station to go to Burlington, shortly afterwards he runs into Jade's father Hugh and his new partner Ingrid, Hugh runs across the street to follow David, is hit by a taxi and dies at the scene of the accident. He goes back to Ann's apartment. They hug each other. Then there is a little argument with him and Keith, then David gives Ann the letters for Jade and goes back to the Ivanhoe Hotel. Jade knocks on his hotel room and the two talk to each other. Jade says she read all of the letters and that she ruined David's life. She says goodbye to David and wants David to reciprocate, but he can't. He holds Jade tightly, lets her fall on the bed, lies down on her and says to her: "I love you and I know that you still love me". They both start to cry and kiss passionately. Jade and David are then back together. Shortly after, Keith comes to the hotel and wants Jade and David to come down. Ingrid identifies David, he admits that he was in the same place as Hugh and that it was an accident. Keith fights David and David is arrested by the police on parole and goes to jail. Shortly before the end of the film, Jade talks to her mother that David still loves her and that no one will love her the way David does.
