Shirley Enola Knight (born July 5, 1936 in Goessel , Kansas - † April 22, 2020 in San Marcos , Texas ) was an American actress .

life and career

Shirley Knight made her actress debut in the late 1950s. For her supporting role in the film The Darkness at the End of the Stairs (1960) she was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe Award . As a supporting actress in the film Sweet Bird Youth (1962), she was nominated again for an Oscar for best supporting actress. In the film drama Love Never a Stranger (1969) by Francis Ford Coppola , she played one of the leading roles alongside James Caan .

In the film drama Endless Liebe (1981) by Franco Zeffirelli she played Ann Butterfield , the mother of Jade Butterfield , who was played by Brooke Shields . For this role, Knight was nominated for the Golden Raspberry . She won a Golden Globe and an Emmy Award for her role in the television film Under Charges - The McMartin Case (1995) . In the film The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisters (2002) she played Necie Rose Kelleher , a friend of Sidda Lee Walker's mother , who played Sandra Bullock .

Knight also appeared in several episodes of various television series; for her role of Agnes Cantwell subsequently Largemouth Bass series NYPD Blue , she won in 1995 the Emmy Award. She was nominated for an Emmy Award in 1992 for her role in the series Law & Order . At the beginning of the second season of the American television series Desperate Housewives , she played the grieving mother of Rex van de Kamp , in which she annoys her hated daughter-in-law Bree . For this supporting role she was nominated for an Emmy in 2006 in the category guest actress in a comedy series . She returned to the set for the fourth season of Desperate Housewives .

In addition to her film and television roles, Knight was considered a prominent stage actress. In 1976 won Knight for her role in the play Kennedy's Children the Tony Award , and in 1997 she was for her role in the play The Young Man from Atlanta nominated for a Tony Award.

Knight was married to Eugene Persson from 1959 to 1969, and to John Hopkins from 1969 to 1998 . She had a daughter from each of the marriages; Kaitlin Hopkins , born in 1965, is also an actress.

Shirley Knight died in Texas in April 2020 at the age of 83.
