The nurse Claire Donnelly ( Demi Moore ) is widowed and becomes pregnant after one night with her brother-in-law. The terminations of pregnancy are illegal during this time. Donnelly asks the head nurse at the hospital where she works if she knows someone who could help her. The woman at first refuses to answer any questions and asks her not to ask again. Later she gives Claire a phone number.
The woman called first recommends a doctor who lives in another city, but treatment would cost $ 1,000 . Claire says she can't afford this. It is recommended to someone who lives in Donnelly's town and only takes $ 400. The man performs the procedure on the kitchen table, before he does not wash his hands. Serious health complications arise.
Part 2: year 1974
The housewife Barbara Barrows ( Sissy Spacek ) already has four children. Her growing daughter doesn't want any more siblings because she fears that she won't be able to go to college. 3rd part: year 1996
Christine Cullen ( Anne Heche ), a student, becomes pregnant by a professor who considers giving money for the termination of pregnancy to be a natural solution to the problem. She turns to Beth Thompson ( Cher ) , a doctor who specializes in abortion . The practice of Dr. Thompson is besieged by abortion opponents who approach Cullen. One of the women demonstrating, Tessie, introduces Cullen to her own daughter, who already has several children.
Christine's friend and roommate Patti threatens that she would have nothing to do with Cullen if she had an abortion. When the doubting Cullen finally decides to have the operation, Thompson is shot by one of the opponents shortly after the operation. Cullen calls for help while Dr. Thompson dies in her arms.
