New York Cops - NYPD Blue , or NYPD Blue for short , is a controversial, but later successful, American television series that started in 1993 . By 2005, 261 episodes were created, which show the everyday work of the homicide squad at a fictional police station of the New York City Police Department in the borough of Manhattan in a manner widely recognized as very realistic . Characteristic are the shaky camera work, the often vulgar tone, the excessively high level of physical violence by the police and revealing sex scenes. However, the intensely characterized main characters and the multitude of long-running, episode-spanning storylines that also include the characters' private lives are characteristic. The cop Andy Sipowicz, who was portrayed by Dennis Franz and was the only character to appear in all episodes, became the leading figure in the series .

With a broadcast duration of twelve years, NYPD Blue became the longest-aired drama series in the history of the US television station ABC and also one of the longest American police series of all time. She was nominated 84 times for the Emmy , 27 times after the first season alone, and won it 20 times, including 1995 in the most important category "Best Drama Series". The series has also been awarded the Golden Globe four times .

In Germany , the series gained no similar success. So far, only 154 of 261 episodes have been broadcast on free TV , 169 have been dubbed and two seasons have been released on DVD.
