Bonnie Somerville (born February 24, 1974 in Brooklyn , New York City , New York ) is an American actress and singer , best known for her roles as Mona in Friends and Rachel Hoffman in OC, California .

Life

Somerville was raised by her mother and her Irish - Catholic family in Flatbush , Brooklyn raised. As a small child, she sang and became interested in acting. Among other things, she played in all the pieces at the Poly Prep High School she attended in Bay Ridge . She then studied musical theater at Boston College . Eventually she moved back to New York City to be trained as an actress at the Lee Strasberg Theater Institute there. During her time in New York (around 1991) Somerville sang in a rock band . She also worked there as a waitress . A model scout discovered her at work and so Somerville modeled for a short time in New York and Europe . When she returned, her willingness to act had only increased. She finally moved to Los Angeles at the age of 22 . There, too, she quickly found a band, but also an agent. Somerville played the first very small role in 1996 at City Hall . Somerville had her first major role in 1999 in the series Shake, Rattle and Roll: An American Love Story , in which she also sang.

Private

Somerville dated fellow actor Zach Braff for some time in 2004 . For the soundtrack of his film Garden State , she sang the song Winding Road .
