Starlets was an American sitcom from the broadcaster The WB from 2000. The series premiered in Germany in 2001.

content

The series is about the antics of the actors in a fictional prime-time soap called Grosse Pointe . Mainly the series is funning other Darren Star productions like Beverly Hills, 90210 .

roll

Hunter Fallow ( Irene Molloy ) is the "beast" of the series. This role includes some traits of Shannen Doherty (or her Beverly Hills, 90210 character Brenda Walsh ) and their behavior on the set of a series. She manipulates the others, is nasty and causes unrest everywhere. She would take every opportunity to get out of the soap and do bigger things right away.

Marcy Sternfeld ( Lindsay Sloane ) is a very friendly person with many quirks. The role of this insecure and emotionally crippled person is originally based on Tori Spelling . She has been in love with Johnny Bishop for over 3 years, has bulimia (she is a human calorie counter), has low self-esteem, and is unaware of Dave's feelings about her.

Courtney Scott ( Bonnie Somerville ) is a nice girl and desperately wants to be a "real" actress after being very successful on the stage in Arizona. She isexploited as a sex symbolin her role as Laura Johnson in Grosse Pointe . It is alsovery well knownin Japan under the name Big Breasts . Courtney herself is a parody of Jennie Garth , but her role Laura is a parody of Tiffani-Amber Thiessens 90210 role Valerie.

Johnny Bishop ( Al Santos ) is the heartthrob. He was hired mainly for his good looks and had some "flaws" in acting. He lives a simple life, surfs, drives a Hummer and is in love with Courtney. His role is a parody of Jason Priestley and his role Brandon Walsh.

Quentin King ( Kohl Sudduth ) is the series' sex symbol. This role has certain similarities with Luke Perry . He is bald, so he has to wear a toupee and tries to keep this fact a secret from the public. Quentin is addicted to meaningless sex. Quentin is said to be a parody of Luke Perry and his role Dylan McKay.

Dave May ( Kyle Howard ) went to school with Johnny and has a much greater acting talent than Johnny. Nevertheless, he was only employed as thesame light double . He lives in Johnny's trailer and was Hunter's personal assistant for a while. Dave likes Marcy, but denies this to Johnny and doesn't have the courage to tell her.

Guest stars

  • Kristin Davis plays herself and is expected to be a guest star in Grosse Pointe . (Episode 14: The End of an Affair )
  • Jason Priestley also plays himself. He meets Quentin in a group of anonymous sex addicts and becomes his role model after he has clearly shown him how to live celibacy. (Episode 15: The opposite of sex )
  • Also Sarah Michelle Gellar plays themselves. They visited the same yoga class as Marcy and Hunter. Rob then asks Marcy to persuade Sarah to take on a guest role in Grosse Pointe . However, she only agrees on condition that she is allowed to kiss Marcys role. Hunter claims to Marcy that Sarah is in love with her. When Marcy kisses Sarah for this reason, she withdraws her consent. (Episode 16: Good Relationships )

criticism

  • “The successful producer Darren Starr created a parody of his own rated hits like Beverly Hills, 90210 or Melrose Place. This wonderfully weird series is all about the vanities of young TV starlets Hunter (Irene Molloy), Marcy (Lindsay Sloane), Courtney (Bonnie Somerville) and their male co-stars Johnny (Al Santos) and Quentin (Kohl Sudduth) , presented as a kind of self-deprecating look at the over-the-top show industry. The lardy series Grosse Pointe offers everything a fan could want: love, vice, cunning. "
  • The Time Magazine wrote the series was "nice cast," had "a clever timing" and was "a naughty, mischievous rebellion".
  • The New York Daily News wrote that it was "the funniest and smartest comedy" WB has ever had.

Awards

  • 2001: Nominated for the Artios Award in the category Best Casting TV, Comedy Pilot (Best Casting for TV, Comedy Pilot) ; ( Greg Orson )

DVD

In January 2006 Sony Pictures Home Entertainment announced that Grosse Pointe would be released on March 14, 2006. Later the publication was suddenly stopped and a few months later it was announced that it would now be published exclusively on amazon.com on November 7, 2006. Nevertheless, the delivery was delayed again but the DVD was finally delivered at the end of November.

On December 4, 2006, Sony announced that the DVD would also be released outside of Amazon on February 13, 2007.

The opening credits and the title song can only be heard once on each disc of the DVD set: In the pilot episode on the 1st and then Puppeteers on the second DVD. The cost for the use of Sex Bomb by Tom Jones in each episode were considered too high. All other episodes had to be re-edited to remove the opening credits and to put the cast credits in the opening scene of each episode.

The DVD extras include an interview with Darren Star and commentary on the following episodes:

  • The First Take (Pilot, with Darren Star)
  • Devil in a Blue Dress (with Darren Star and Co-Executive Producer Robin Schiff)
  • Highest Peak (Satisfaction, with Darren Star and Robin Schiff)
  • Lies and Secrets (Secrets and Lies, with Darren Star and Robin Schiff)

A German DVD release is not yet planned.
