Shannen Maria Doherty (* 12. April 1971 in Memphis , Tennessee ) is an American actress and animal rights - activist , made especially for the television series Beverly Hills, 90210 and Charmed - Magical witches is known.

Life

Career

Shannen Doherty is the daughter of Tom and Rosa Doherty. Her interest in acting was shown early on. She had her first television role in 1981 with a guest appearance on the television series Father Murphy . Michael Landon , who wrote and directed the series, was so impressed with Doherty's performance that he hired her for the sequel to his television series Our Little Farm . There she played the role of Jenny Wilder from 1982 to 1983 and thus became known to a larger audience for the first time. This was followed by a number of guest appearances in various television series and roles in television films before Doherty received a role in the feature film Heathers in 1988 .

From 1990 to 1994 she played the role of Brenda Walsh in the hit television series Beverly Hills, 90210 . For Doherty, this series was the big breakthrough, but she struggled to process the sudden fame. The tabloids reported numerous affairs and binge drinking. There were also tensions during the filming of the series. Numerous arguments with the other cast members eventually led to Doherty being fired by producer Aaron Spelling .

In March 1994, Doherty posed for the US edition of Playboy magazine. In 1995 she played a leading role in the feature film Mallrats .

From 1998 to 2001 Doherty played the role of Prudence Halliwell in the hit television series Charmed . After the third season, she left the series in a dispute with the production company.

In 2003 she had herself photographed a second time for Playboy (December 2003 issue of the US edition).

In 2003 and 2004 Doherty hosted the controversial program Scare Tactics , in which unsuspecting people were mercilessly frightened. In the fall of 2004 she was hired by those responsible for the US series North Shore to improve the format's audience ratings. Doherty's embodiment of the scheming Alexandra Hudson was ultimately unable to save the series from being canceled.

In 2005 she played a leading role alongside Gina Gershon and Randy Quaid in the television film Category 7 - The End of the World .

In 2006, Doherty co-hosted the talk show The View . From August 22, 2006, her program Breaking Up with Shannen Doherty ran , in which she accompanied people who wanted to break up with their partner. This series was canceled after the first season.

Christmas 2007 she was seen on US television in the film Christmas Caper . The comedy is about a thief who returns to her sleepy hometown in Connecticut .

She took part in the tenth season of the American television show Dancing with the Stars in the spring of 2010 . In October 2010 Doherty starred in the American television movie Growing the Big One . Her book Badass: A Hard-Earned Guide to Living Life with Style and (the Right) Attitude was published in November 2010 . Doherty played Gretel in 2012 in the horror fairy tale Witchslayer Gretl on the station Syfy .

In 2008 and 2009 they played once more the role of Brenda Walsh in seven episodes of the first season of Beverly Hills - spinoffs 90210 .

In 2018 she played a supporting role in the short-lived television series Heathers , which is a reboot of the film of the same name, in which she starred in 1988.

Private life

From 1993 to 1994 Doherty was married to Ashley Hamilton. In her second marriage she married Rick Salomon , the marriage was annulled in 2003. On October 15, 2011, Doherty married Kurt Iswarienko in Malibu.

In February 2015 Doherty was diagnosed with breast cancer, which has meanwhile led to the formation of metastases. Two years later, she announced that the disease would resolve.

In February 2020 it was announced that Doherty had cancer again. She decided to go public with it herself before false reports emerged about it.

Commitment to animal and environmental protection

The vegetarian Shannen Doherty advocates a ban on the consumption of dog and cat meat by humans and speaks out against the use of real fur and crocodile skin in the fashion industry. She regularly posts adoption information for pets on her Instagram page.

In 2017 she organized a benefit gala, the proceeds of which went to saving animals.

Working for the marine conservation organization Sea Shepherd

Shannen Doherty is an active supporter of the marine conservation organization Sea Shepherd . In March 2014, she went to sea with Holly Marie Combs and the Sea Shepherd crew to demonstrate the effects of a new Australian law that allows the killing of large sharks .

In August 2014, she challenged Sea Shepherd founder Paul Watson and the Sea Shepherd crew at the Ice Bucket Challenge , drawing attention to the marine conservation organization.

In October 2014, she participated in Operation Infinite Patience as part of the Sea Shepherd Crew Cove Guardians . The aim of the campaign was to raise awareness of the killing of dolphins in Taiji, Japan . In the video made during the campaign, she tearfully called to avoid dolphinariums .

Doherty has repeatedly appeared in public with Sea Shepherd merchandise, and on her forty-third birthday, she encouraged fans to donate to Sea Shepherd instead of giving her gifts at upcoming events.
