Cate Dove is a jewel thief who returns to her hometown after a failed coup to look after her niece and nephew. There she meets her former love partner Hank Harrison, who is now a sheriff. During the pre-Christmas small town life, she decides to give up her criminal career and falls in love with Hank again.

Social scientist Lauren Rosewarne sees Christmas Caper as the trope of the "girl from the small town who returns from the big city". In such narratives, big city characters could have careers and financial success, but only in the small town would they find the “spirit of Christmas”, love and close relationships.
