Freeform is a television station in the United States and is a cable company of the Disney-ABC Television Group , a division of the Walt Disney Company .

History of the station

The station went on the air on April 29, 1977 as an offshoot of Pat Robertson's Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) under the name CBN Satellite Service and first changed the name to CBN Cable Network in 1981 . In order to draw attention to the - in contrast to other cable channels - particularly family-friendly program, the station was renamed The CBN Family Channel on August 1, 1988 . The commercial success of the cable broadcaster endangered the non-profit status and associated privileges of the CBN, whereupon the former became independent in 1990 under the new name The Family Channel .

The parent company International Family Entertainment was bought by Fox Kids Worldwide in July 1997 , the name of which was then changed to Fox Family Worldwide . In order to emphasize the affiliation of the Family Channel to the new parent company, it was renamed Fox Family Channel on August 15, 1998 .

On October 24, 2001, Fox Family Worldwide was sold by its two owners - News Corporation and Haim Saban - to the Walt Disney Company for approximately 2.9 billion US dollars and renamed ABC Family Worldwide . On November 10, 2001, the cable broadcaster also changed its name to ABC Family .

On January 12, 2016, the station was renamed to Freeform .

Series

As a typical cable broadcaster, Freeform mainly broadcasts repeats of series that were originally produced for another network or a cable broadcaster - so-called off-network reruns or off-network syndication . The majority make up comedy series, typically family sitcoms.

Since 2005 Freeform (then ABC Family) has also ordered a small number of its own series - so-called original series - which are typically first broadcast during the networks' “summer break” between mid-May and mid-September or in spring between January and March.

Atypical for a Disney cable station, the program is also filled with infomercials at night (usually from 1 a.m. to 7 a.m. ET), with religious programs also being broadcast in this broadcast block.
