If Only (alternatively If only - Rendezvous with Destiny ) is a US American and British tragic comedy directed by Gil Junge from 2004 .

action

American and musician Samantha Andrews and Briton Ian Wyndham are in a relationship and live together in London. The relationship suffers from the fact that Ian seems to be in a relationship with his job rather than Sam.

One evening after an argument with Ian, Samantha had a fatal accident when her taxi was involved in a car accident. Sam's sudden death shakes Ian. The next morning, however, he realizes that he is living through the same day on which his girlfriend was still alive. All the events of that fateful day inevitably take place again in a modified form, however much he tries to change fate.

Ian tries to show Samantha his love and avoid her death. However, he realizes quickly that there is nothing he can do about it.

Ian is changing and becoming more open. He tries to make the day as perfect as possible and to prevent the fateful end. When Samantha gets back into the taxi in question in the evening, he consciously gets into the car with her and sits on the side that another car will collide with shortly after leaving. So this time Ian dies instead of Samantha.

Reviews

“A romantic tragic comedy that has a surprising number of classic Hollywood patterns for an independent film. A nice to look at, well photographed and equipped love story based on the before and after principle. "

David Nusair wrote on Reel Film Reviews that the first half hour seemed like a “ typical romantic comedy ”. The message of the film is "more pessimistic " than it could be. The play of the main characters is " engaging ".

The magazine TV direkt 6/2007 wrote that the film " drowned in kitsch ".
