Tom Wilkinson OBE (* 5. February 1948 in Leeds as Thomas Geoffrey Wilkinson ) is a British actor and, among other Golden Globe award winner.

Live and act

Wilkinson moved to Canada for a few years , then returned to England . He graduated from the University of Kent with a degree in English .

Wilkinson made his debut in the 1970s in the BBC - TV shows . In 1976 he worked in the Polish- British film production Die Schattenlinie by Andrzej Wajda . In the film Shakespeare in Love he starred in 1998 with Gwyneth Paltrow , Judi Dench and Joseph Fiennes and in 2000 in the war film The Patriot with Mel Gibson . For his role in In the Bedroom (2001) alongside Sissy Spacek and Marisa Tomei , he was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Actor category and for a BAFTA Award .

In 2008, Wilkinson received another Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, this time for his role in the thriller Michael Clayton . In addition, Wilkinson was also active in the theater, including in productions for the Royal Shakespeare Company . In 2009 he was awarded a Golden Globe for his role as Benjamin Franklin in the television miniseries John Adams .

Wilkinson has been married to actress Diana Hardcastle since 1988, with whom he has two children.

Wilkinson has no regular German speaker and was spoken by very different speakers in 56 films dubbed between 1976 and 2014. It has been dubbed most often (15 times) by Lutz Riedel (including in Batman Begins , The Lincoln Conspiracy and Grand Budapest Hotel ), who was first engaged in 1998 for Shakespeare in Love as Wilkinson's German voice. But even after 1998, Wilkinson has been dubbed by other speakers in 29 films so far.
