Jenny's Wedding is a 2015 American romantic drama film directed by Mary Agnes Donoghue , who also wrote the script. The main roles are played alongside Katherine Heigl and Alexis Bledel , Tom Wilkinson and Linda Emond .

action

Jenny is visiting her parents Rose and Eddie Farrell in Cleveland , where, as in the past, her family tries again to set her up with a man because it is believed she still lives alone. Jenny's mother, in particular, worries that her daughter still hasn't found the right man to marry. Jenny eventually tells her father that she is in a relationship with someone.

Back at her apartment, Jenny reveals to her roommate Kitty that she has decided to get married and to start a family, and it turns out that Kitty is the woman Jenny lives with and who she wants to marry.

The time has now come for Jenny to admit to her mother that she is a lesbian . She reacts with disappointment that Jenny has lied to her for many years and asks her not to say anything to her siblings Anne and Michael at first. Only reluctantly, Jenny complies with this request and even lets her sister believe that she has had a relationship with a married man who has broken up. This story quickly spreads among family friends and colleagues.

Anne happened to see Jenny and Kitty hugging and kissing in a mall. Anne immediately reports this to her mother, who admits she already knows about it. Anne is very angry that her sister has lied to her for years and that her mother also did not tell her the truth. Jenny's brother, on the other hand, reacts to Jenny's disclosure that she is a lesbian and wants to marry her friend Kitty by saying that he has suspected this for some time.

Jenny asks her sister Anne's forgiveness for not telling her the truth, and then begs to be her maid of honor. However, Jenny's father still doesn't know.

At the funeral of a neighbor, the father and daughter quarrel, and it becomes clear that he does not fully accept his daughter and her attitude towards life. Since he doesn't want to deal with it either, he deliberately avoids a discussion. Meanwhile, Jenny's mother is confronted in the supermarket with being talked about in a derogatory way about her and her family. This makes her realize that Jenny's love for Kitty is nothing immoral, and makes her realize that she will continue to stand by her daughter. Jenny's father, however, remains aloof.

In the meantime, Anne has doubts about her marriage to Frankie because her husband believes the household is a woman's business and doesn't care about anything. Realizing she's happier without him, she throws Frankie out. At the same time, Jenny and Kitty are busy planning the course of their wedding celebrations. Since Jenny still can't talk to her father, she asks her brother to lead her to the altar. While the wedding celebrations have already begun, Jenny's father also realizes that he would be making a mistake if he withdrew from his daughter and that he would like to be the man who leads Jenny to the altar.

criticism

Jenny's Wedding received mostly negative reviews. On Metacritic , the film received a Metascore of 33/100 based on 10 reviews, and on Rotten Tomatoes , 14 percent of the 14 reviews were positive.

The criticism in Variety was rather divided, Justin Chang attested the film solid performances and honorable intentions , but Donoghue kept her characters "too long in the dark", while the audience had long since figured out what Heigl was getting at in her role. Alexis Bledel's talent is "wasted" here.

Kino.de saw it a little differently and spoke of an “ambitious B-drama”, which read as follows: “What happens when a homosexual dares to come out (and even to marry) in a completely conservative family , describes this drama from American independent production, which promotes understanding for both sides. Katherine Heigl can be given high credit for being willing to take part in such a hustle and bustle as a top Hollywood earner, and commercially it won't damage this ambitious B-drama either. "
