Justin Choigee Chang (born January 3, 1983 in Los Angeles County , California ) is an American film critic and columnist for the Los Angeles Times .

Life

After graduating from the University of Southern California with a degree in journalism from Los Angeles County , Justin Chang joined Variety in 2004 and became the magazine's chief film critic in 2010 before being promoted to chief film critic in 2013. In 2014 he received the first Roger Ebert Award from the African-American Film Critics Association .

Chang has been a film critic for the Los Angeles Times since 2016 and also reviews films for the US radio programs Fresh Air and FilmWeek and for NPR . Chang also published the book FilmCraft: Editing .

He is a member and executive director of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association , a member and chairman of the National Society of Film Critics and, in this capacity, the US representative in FIPRESCI .

Chang has served on several juries at film festivals, including the South by Southwest Film Festival , in San Francisco, in Busan and in Jerusalem. He was a member of the international jury at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2019.
