action
James and Anne Manning are apparently intact marriages in their residences in urban London and rural Buckinghamshire. James Manning is a successful attorney and the money maker in the relationship. But he doesn't notice that his wife is starting a relationship with the attractive Bill out of boredom.
When Manning suspects that Bill Bule, who is known in the village and belongs to an aristocratic family, is responsible for an accident resulting in an escape from the car in which the husband of the Mannings housekeeper died, he confronts him, brings him to a confession and demands him to face the police. Bill promises him this. In a conversation with his wife, Manning not only learns about their relationship with Bill, but also that it was not Bill but she who drove the car and caused the accident.
As a result, James and Anne Manning, whose relationship has been shaken by the revelations, must ensure that Anne is not charged with her offense. James tells Anne to end the affair with Bill. After James first encountered Police Inspector Marshall, he found out by chance that Anne has by no means ended the relationship with Bill. When he then confronts her, she tells him that she cannot imagine an end to the affair with Bill. That actually means the end of their marriage. Still, he gives Bill an alibi for the accident.
Annoyed with remorse since the accident, Anne tells the real story to her housekeeper Maggie, who until then had assumed that Bill killed her husband. However, since Anne Maggie had stopped despite her conviction for theft, Maggie feels obliged to her, forgives her and helps to bring the police investigation to a close. Anne then moves back to James.
When James happened to learn that Bill had terminal cancer a few months later, he went to the hospital. He tells Anne about Bill's illness, despite his advice not to tell her about his illness. She then leaves James again and accompanies Bill until his death. The film ends with Bill's funeral, at which James and Anne meet again.
Reviews
“Excellent film adaptation of the novel about the fragility of civil security and the ambivalent power of desire and love, which can disintegrate existing structures, but also helps to overcome life crises. Visually suggestive and with a feel for brilliant dialogues, the film convinces above all with its excellent leading actor. "
“In his directorial debut, Oscar-winning screenwriter Julian Fellowes [...] dissects marriage and the definition of happiness. With subtle observations and subtle but multi-layered characterizations, he shows the devastating consequences of lying, but ultimately also the nature of love. Without recourse, with great maturity and an excellent cast led by Tom Wilkinson. "
“It is significant that the plot of the film can be summed up in a few lines. Beloved Lies impress with neither an extraordinary plot nor surprising twists. Fellowes created a quiet, intense character portrait about loyalty, reason and dealing with guilt, which fully relies on its characters and is effortlessly carried by the phenomenal actors. [...]
A thoroughly grown-up drama that will probably bore younger, less experienced moviegoers to death. Those who can get involved with the profound topic will not only be rewarded with 87 minutes of subtle tension, but also with an ending that will probably not be perceived by all viewers as a happy ending, but the way to a complicated, more honest and ultimately more hopeful one Shows the future. "
