John Neville

John Neville , OBE , CM (born May 2, 1925 in London , England - † November 19, 2011 in Toronto , Ontario ) was a British - Canadian actor in film, television and theater.

Life

John Neville studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and made his debut in theater and British television in the 1950s. At first he was often seen in Shakespeare roles, including Richard II. In Othello at London's Old Vic Theater , he alternated with Richard Burton , with whom he was close friends, the title role and the role of Iago .

His international film career only began when Terry Gilliam cast him in 1988 for the role of Baron Münchhausen in The Adventures of Baron Münchhausen . Since then, Neville has often been seen in prominent supporting roles in large-scale productions. On television, Neville appeared in guest roles in series such as the X-Files, The Scary Cases of the FBI or Starship Enterprise - The Next Century , Episode Attack The Borg, Part 1 in a small role as Isaac Newton .

Neville emigrated to Canada in 1972 and took Canadian citizenship. Between 1986 and 1989 he was Artistic Director of the Stratford Festival in Canada. In 1999 he was nominated for a Gemini Award for the television production Emily of New Moon for Best Actor in a Dramatic Role .

In 2006 he was awarded the Order of Canada , the highest Canadian honor for civilians.

Private life

John Neville died in Toronto, Canada at the age of 86. He left behind his wife, Caroline Hopper, and six children.
