The Countess and her Colonel (original title: The Adventures of Gerard ) is a British-Italian-Swiss literary film adaptation by director Jerzy Skolimowski from 1970 with Peter McEnery , Claudia Cardinale , Eli Wallach and Jack Hawkins in the leading roles. The film was produced by Sir Nigel Films for United Artists based on a story by Arthur Conan Doyle .

action

The year is 1808. It is the time of the occupation of Spain by Napoleon Bonaparte . Etienne Gerard is a French colonel of hussars and as arrant womanizer known. As a daring messenger, it transports secret messages and consignments between the French regiments within Spain .

Gerard's most important attribute is his outrageous vanity - he is completely convinced that he is the bravest soldier , the most perfectly formed swordsman, the best rider and of course the greatest lover in all of France . Gerard's self-image is no accident, as he has demonstrated his remarkable bravery and recklessness on many occasions. Obsessed with fame and honor, he is always ready to drop a fiery speech or a gallant remark about a lady.

Teresa, the enchanting Spanish Countess of Morales, appears on the scene, who is supposed to exploit this human weakness, the Colonel's obvious vanity, to get to the courier's secret information. She stalks her alleged victim with lovely charm. The French hussar colonel is vain beyond measure, but not as simple-minded as one might think. He quickly sees through the play of the beautiful countess and, as his pride dictates, a cat-and-mouse game of love, passion and intrigue soon ignites.

criticism

“The daring escapades of a French colonel hussar at the time of the occupation of Spain by Napoleon (1808). A comedy adaptation of a story by Arthur Conan Doyle, which does not get beyond well-known actors, good approaches and convulsive humor. "
