Witold Sobociński (born October 15, 1929 in Ozorków , † November 19, 2018 in Konstancin-Jeziorna ) was a Polish cameraman .

life and work

Witold Sobociński studied camera at the Łódź Film School and finished his studies in 1955. During his studies he played as a drummer in the band Melomani . He then started working for Polish television and was initially employed as a cameraman for documentaries.

His first feature film work was in 1967 when he shot the camera for Jerzy Skolimowski's film Hands Up! led. However, the film was banned by the Polish censors and only released in 1981. His works for Andrzej Wajda and Roman Polański became particularly famous . In 1980 Witold Sobociński became professor at the Łódź Film School and trained cameramen. His son Piotr Sobociński also completed his training with his father at the university and, when he died early in 2001, was one of the most recognized cameramen in the film business. For his last work on Jerzy Wójcik's war drama Wrota Europy , Witold Sobociński received the Polish Film Prize in 2001 . Sobociński died in November 2018 at the age of 89.
